Interdiction / DL of units attacked in land phjase

Post by Cavalry Corp »

Two questions please

question

When you fly interdiction and it shows on the map does that mean those interdiction points apply in the opponents turn, when they move through those hexes? Not sure I understand fully how it works.

Second question

when you fly reconnaissance on units you are going to attack with ground forces ( say in the front line) it says in the manual it helps you in combat is that correct? I don't see anyone ever mentioning it as useful and because the air war seems so heavy on casualties I do not know whether it is worth flying these missions or not though of course historically it should be.

1 - yes, interdiction you place in your air phase is then in the hex for your land phase, the enemy logistics phase and their next land phase

... so it hits movement and logistics

2 - yes, but its hard to see/quantify. Crudely the combat routine has a number of sub-routines that can get invoked and that start to remove the more mathematical relationship between elements. One of those is an ambush/surprise routine and you are more vulnerable to thse off poor DL

This might be too simplistic but any hints on what sort of benefit you would get with combat in a given hex with:

a) 1 Air Recon for your side?
b) 5 Air Recon for your side?
c) 10+ Air Recon for your side?

Would having a recon SU and/or a full recon TOE in a unit mitigate/intensify the ambush/surprise routine?

the answer is deep in the code and its the sort of stuff that Gary seems to like to keep out of sight.

Purely from observation, my feeling is this routine may explain why you can get odd/extreme outcomes if you attack with very low DL, so say DL<3. You can see it vs the AI if you remove FoW, a stack is weak but beats you easily (remember that taking off FOW doesn't protect you from the consequences of low DL values).

I'd suspect as ever there is a random element, leadership rolls etc. Again purely off observation, once you get enough DL to see the CV (even if what you are seeing is fogged and misleading) this sort of thing gets less frequent

OK thanks you for the explanation it figures out ok though a bit more info would be useful as to know if its worth the air losses.

I am trying to cut those down and am still learning but they seem very high. So I suppose the question is can it be worth so many planes to increase the D/L? In WITP AE also a GG game it certainly is.

I'd say that high recon/dl values from air recon is just not feasible in WiTE2, the map area is too large and neither side have the assets to do it.

so most of the time I'll go fishing, get some rough idea of what is where, very rarely I might want to be more sure over second/third echelon formations and then its really worth an effort.

The Allies in WiTW can routinely generate high interdiction over clear terrain hexes.

A wider point is that missions that are perfectly feasible (indeed standard) for the W Allies are really esoteric choices in WiTE2

thanks... I was thinking of intensive recon on say front line units? Not over a wide area of map but say 1 or 2 hexes. My original question was how does a high air given DL help the ground combat but if that answer is hidden by the code then we will assume its quite variable.
