I remember watching a documentary many years ago about that raid. They interviewed one of the groundcrew who had witnessed some of the damaged bombers coming home and he said he'd been surprised to see the amount of hydraulic fluid and glycol leaking from and streaked along the fuselage of a lot of the planes... Then he suddenly realised it wasn't hydraulic fluid and glycol at all.
