pt boats

Post by generalfdog »

Maybe I am missing something but after 041 patch I don't see what the point is of a patrol boat they cost more then subs they are less effective and weaker they also can't do a complete blockade which was what I used them for before, they can't perform convoy sub hunting, they can't stack with the fleet to take losses, on their own they just die and do nothing, I suppose they could help keep unescorted transports from landing units but really has anyone found a use for them?

They provide entertainment for the troops thereby boosting morale perhaps?

Is it Ernest Borgnine in the middle?

By the way, after spending almost 10 years in the navy as an enlisted man he finally got his "commission" [;)]

From Wiki:

Borgnine joined the United States Navy in October 1935 after graduation from high school. He served aboard the destroyer/minesweeper USS Lamberton (DD-119; AG-21 and DMS-2) and was honorably discharged from the Navy in October 1941. In January 1942, he reenlisted in the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor. During World War II, he patrolled the Atlantic Coast on an antisubmarine warfare ship, the USS Sylph (PY-12). In September 1945, he was once again honorably discharged from the Navy. He served a total of almost 10 years in the Navy and obtained the grade of gunner's mate first class. His military awards include the Navy Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal with Fleet Clasp, American Campaign Medal with 3⁄16" bronze star, and the World War II Victory Medal.

BTW, sorry to hijack the thread with a bit of humor but I hope someone can answer the OP's question.

I stopped investing in patrol boats and subs -- Allied or Japanese -- after playing through several 41-campaigns. They don't provide much bang for the bucks. I use the ones I have at the start of the campaign for resupplying ground units only.

Perhaps subs and PT boats are more useful in PvP? Verses the AI, I tried lengthy submarine blockading campaigns several times as both the Japanese and Allied sides. It seems to have very little impact on the game.

Just an aside, but I also noticed at the end of the last campaign I played as the Japanese, the Allied AI had 87 unassigned US escort ships -- and another 26 Unassigned UK escort Ships! That's 3480 production pts spent by the AI on unassigned US escort ships and another 1040 UK production pts spent on unassigned escort ships.

There were also 24 US submarine flotillas sitting in Los Angles Harbor at the End of the game. The AI seemed to give up on its Sub Campaign as there had been no trace of US Subs attacking Japanese Merchant Routes for at least the last year of the campaign. I think if I had the production pts to buy 24 sub units I probably would see some impact from a prolonged submarine campaign on merchant shipping. But I never seem to have that sort of cheddar to toss at sub production.

Are they most expensive? I will have to change that. They should be cheaper than subs.

For the record I like subs and buy lots of them as the allies and buy some as Japan, just haven't found pt boats to be overly useful. both pt boats and subs only do supply interdiction on ports not full blockade like capitol ships but that will effect land units and especially air units in a crowded port. If you playing AI it probably depends on logistics level how much it effects them

Just to be sure of what you are saying, PT boats should cost less PP than subs. Is it correct?

Also, historically, were PT boats useful in hunting subs?

They should be cheaper. Subs can already be hunted on coastlines.

BTW, if you follow the link of the last post you'll find that there was a real PT73 that served in the Pacific during WW2 - not at Taratupa though [;)]
