Can I get my PBEM turn restarted?

Post by Luke Huston »

I'm embarrassed to say someone in my family closed my PBEM game before I could send it back to my opponent. Do I have any way to get it back to the state it was in, or restart the turn, or am I just stuck?

1. Send a PM to your opponent explaining the situation.
2. Download your turn and start over again. Try and perform the exact same actions, particularly in regard to naval movement or any other bad surprises that happened. Can't help it if results vary though.
3. Save your turn as you go along, and particularly before stepping away from the computer.
4. If you're going to be away from the computer for a longer bit of time just exit the game via the option button, it will automatically save the turn before exiting.
5. Get in the habit of doing 3 & 4 as downloading turns without saving triggers a warning email that you will get. If you continue to download turns without saving you can eventually trigger sanctions.

Thanks for the response Taxman - I'm unclear on a number of things here
I can do 1, but I don't have the option to download my turn again. Would my opponent have the ability to re-upload their turn?
If I save my turn how would I re-load that for a PBEM game? Maybe there's a magical save I can reload [:(]
You're absolutely right that saving work as you go along is the way to go for anything on a computer. I'm sad I didn't in this case

I have no idea why you don't have the option to redownload your turn.

If you go to the PBEM screen, you don't see the turn in green?

It depends on how the game was closed:

If it was done with the ingame exit button then your partial turn is saved on the server and you can just download and won't even have to redo any actions you already made that turn. You can check this by going to the pbem lobby, a saved partial turn is also green, but with a slightly different hue.

If the game was closed via task manager etc, you will have to redo the entire turn. In that case the game will be in it's normal green color.

If the game was closed via the end turn button you're out of luck as it counts as "turn completed" and your opponent can only play his next turn but not reupload the last.
In this case the game will be in red (until your opponents next turn).

Regrettably not. I think it's a security thing? Keeps folks from just restarting their turns over and over until they get a result they're happy with.

Interesting - I wonder if my family member actually ended my turn rather than just crashing the game? I don't have a green game in the listing.

This is definitely a thing (e.g. https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=5100913), however redownloading 1 round will surely not trigger any red flags. I'm from an extremely rural area with unreliable internet and I don't think I ever played a match without the need of an occasional redownload due to loosing server connection or simply crashing after a bug.

Imho that's the only explanation. I don't know whether someone with admin privileges on the server can revert the game or not. It's probably best to contact your opponent and find some improvised "in game solution", like him not exploiting the areas where you didn't act that turn ...

It now seems likely that my family member hit "end turn" rather than crashing the game. Thanks for the interaction Mr. Tax
