XQ-222 Valkyrie

Post by FifthDomain »

Evening all

Should the XQ-222 Valkyrie (Navy) be able to take off from a Gerald R. Ford Class Carrier its in the database as 0m (VTOL) TOD/LAD but ends up in a constant waiting for runway cycle.

Thanks for your time.

The XQ-222 is fixed wing so even though it's listed as VTOL is still needs to be flagged as carrier capable to operate from a carrier. See the tag for the MQ-25.

As for if in reality it has been tested off a carrier I couldn't say.
The Navy variant should imho since it's flagged hypothetical and would provide more flexibility with that it mind. It's not just the ford class btw, the restriction applies to all carriers that are not MOB or LHA. I believe it stems from the fact it's flagged fixed-wing (non-carrier capable 2001 vs 2002 carrier-capable). Funny enough the 3001 and 3002 pads on say a ddg will allow it to takeoff and land, same is true for mob or lha as they're not flagged pure carriers.

Temporary workaround:
The Non-pro (editing database) workaround I have used is lua for testing hypotheticals with regard to it or utap-22 or other such uav's not flagged for carrier use but my desire to put them on the carrier anyway is as follows.
I spawn a helipad(s) or SUHP on land initially, turn off autodetect, call it CarrierXYZ pad, put the valk's in there and just update the pad(s) unit(s) lat and lon every 5 seconds to whatever the current location of the carrier is, if carrier is destroyed I destroy the pad(s) unit as well. Little messy but seems to work fine. You can do similar with adding extra land-runways to carriers for say using the -58 airforce variant or ch-5 that need short runways, but in that case you'll have to also 'group' the runway with the ship.

Cheers for your input guys maybe I'll make a request in the database thread for it to happen id quite like some on my carrier for elint and recon got growlers I guess but something low observable would go nicely. Does seem strange it will launch from say MV ocean trader but not a carrier.

I'll tweak this and bring the old hypothetical Navy "XQ-222" in line with the new Air Force "XQ-58" (XQ-222 was the initial designation) which was added recently and has more up-to-date stats/loadouts. Thanks for pointing it out!

Given the Valkyrie (since redesignated XQ-58) is a USAF project and its "V"TOL capability is accomplished by rocket assist/parachute, the lack of a carrier-capable flag seems to be appropriate.

I like your workaround. Can you share a scenario (or required LUA code to determine current carrier location and move helipad to that location) in which you use this?

thanks

I suppose you could just leave and go make your own game/simulation that is absolutely perfect. Why don't you go do that? That'll show 'em.

What version of the db is the OP looking at? As FifthDomain mentioned, in 492, the XQ-222 was renamed XQ-58 and has a navy and an air force version.

OP was speaking of v491 (prior to v491 changes for the valkyrie specifically).

Orca - db3k 491 sample attached as requested (facility location sync for getting around things like this for hypothetical, highlights attaching runway as well as heliport, and destruction when associated master is destroyed).
