Campaign question

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Campaign question

Post by jtnslange »

Finally picked this beauty up. I was wondering has anyone created a scenario that starts in 1942 and goes all the way till the end? I know you can play different scenarios but I would like to play a combined Torch till the fall of the reich. Any ideas?

Like you, I've only recently bought this one with the Torch dlc.. I'd love the entire North African Campaign with the Gary Grigsby detail touch but hey, we can all dream.

theres 2 core problems

a) the July start date for the campaign is set in the game engine, so T1 must be that date. The only way around this is to pretend that date really is 1 Sept 39 or whatever (there is a Poland mod knocking around that had to go this way). This repeats across the WiTx series. I think that is one of the main reasons why the Torch scenarios were set up as stand alone. But if December 42 becomes T1 the game ends something like Feb 45.

b) another enduring problem is that so far the game series can get away with a hugely abstract naval system. In the GC the U-boats are just a VP dynamic and the Allied naval assets become the task forces. Thats not wildly unrealistic for July 1943-war end as the Italian navy is effectively out of the war already, the German surface fleet minimal and the U-Boats confined to a source of attrition. The more you push back into 1942 the more all those abstractions seem less satisfactory

Less a matter of wrestling with core bits (or gaps) in the game design is a feeling that the final phase of the N African war is a stand alone exercise? In terms of the wider war it may have seen an earlier or later Sicilian invasion?

The issue of a War in Europe, perhaps starting on 22 June 1941 is a different matter. It gets around (a) and it demands a solution to (b), the latter might be easier given the Theatre Box system created for WiTE2 but thats just a guess
