Well, here is my opinion even though you did not ask for it.

As the saying goes, it is better to give than to receive!

1) What he said! Giveth over Receiveth.

2) Strike as early as you can before defenses are improved.

3) Over the Home Islands at least, night strikes on Manpower are a saving grace, because a Japan player who has succeeded with research and manufacturing goals will quickly have defenses that exact a high price for daytime raids.

4) An early invasion of Hokkaido (I did this in the prior game) makes strategic strikes on Honshu much easier.

5) Recon of the target must be strong for effective strikes.

6) Weather matters, especially because of the very high Service Rating of B-29's. For daylight raids you want strikes with as many bombers as possible to saturate defenses, while for night raids you want Manpower strikes with as many bombers as possible to spike Fires as high as possible. In either case that means having decent weather for effective strikes with some practical maximum number of bombers. Raids conducted in bad weather have a greater likelihood of being ineffective and, coupled with the long time to make ready (high Service Rating) for B-29's at least, results in a lost strike cycle. Mind the weather over the target.

7) China and other non-Home Islands targets, game house rules allowing: a) get as much done as you can while retreating during Japan's expansion phase, b) as soon as practical hit supply production to wear ground defenses down more quickly (the ground game being about speed of advance + destruction of enemy combat power + preserving own combat power).

• The casualty ratio at the bridgehead near Paoshan favored us today. Three units will attack tomorrow, the other three (with the highest Disruption) will rest for the day. Significantly, at least one enemy unit is pulling back, heading SE down the road to Tsuyung. Our goal is to retreat them into the trackless mountains to the east before they can exit down the road.

• By virtue of a massive airlift into Paoshan, the heavily over stacked bridgehead nearby is fully supplied.

• The 29th Chinese Corps (near Mengtze) will move into Mengtze and effect a forced river crossing NE from there with the two Aus Bdes.

• Three infantry divisions have been lifted off Daito Shoto, which is now well within stacking limits. Command HQ's and base forces are unloading and on route, so the island will be over stacked again but not by so much.

• Transports are marshalling for the 5 Ryukyu targets. They will take more than a week to do that and be at the correct bases to commence loading. The goal is to load up all units for all 5 targets at once, but we still have to see if that will be possible.

• Recon reports possible battleship in port at Nagasaki/Sasebo.

• We have 90x B-29B in 6 squadrons at Pearl Harbor. I would like to hold them for Naha because from there they would be within Normal range of all of Honshu and even a little of Hokkaido with their payload of 36x 500 pound bombs. An alternative option is to base them at Saipan, where they can reach Yokohama/Yokosuka (and other bases in a line with it) at Normal range. Maddeningly, Tokyo, just 1 hex farther, is at Extended range. I think I am going to go with that alternate plan so we can reduce Imperial supply production sooner. We will consolidate a number of B-29-1 squadrons at Saipan to make room (squadron-wise) and will out those depleted squadrons. We have no B-29-1 spares, and currently only 6x B-29-25 in the pool.

1945 March 19

Northwestern China.

The enemy units still 1 hex NW of Tsuyung are not moving. The units which withdrew from the bridgehead have passed through that hex and are now in or passing through Tsuyung. Tomorrow 2 large units will arrive in that hex from the bridgehead and then all of our units in that hex will commence attacking.

It is not clear if and how hard the Empire will fight to hold Tsuyung.

As mentioned previously, we have 3 units moving to cross the river 1 hex southwest of Kunming. That hex holds enemy units most of which were defeated in Indochina and at Mengtze. There is 1 enemy unit there, probably brigade strength, the origin of which is unclear.

Other units, 2 large and 1 medium, are still a few weeks away coming in from Lashio toward Mengtze/Kunming.

1945 March 19

Southwestern China.

The enemy units in Nanning are not moving. Recon of Nanning just faded on us so more recon is being assigned. I hope to trap the units there. We have a Bde currently passing through Nanning on the road to toward the NW which will then turn east to block that forest hex; they will take over a week to complete that movement. The hex just west of Nanning will be blocked in 2 or 3 days. That leaves the road hex between Nanning and Liuchow, which is currently being abandoned by the 2 enemy divisions there.

The question is: are the enemy units in Nanning moving east? Due to the faded recon, the answer is unclear. The path is a primary road so unimpeded travel would be very fast.

Our 2 divisions between Nanning and Liuchow will begin attacking tomorrow. The units we have just southwest of Liuchow will rush to aid them.

Our mass of troops in Nanning will only attack if recon confirms that the enemy units there are moving to make their escape.
