Radio silence from the developers tells me release is still a ways away. If this weren't the case, there wouldn't have been a second wave of beta testers, and release certainly wouldn't have been pushed to 2022. And yes, the release is in 2022:

We heard you loud and clear asking for updates on the DW2 release, and we assure you that DW2 is almost ready.
At the moment we don’t have a release date, but we can tell you that it will be in Q1 2022. The official date will be revealed in the upcoming months so stay tuned to find out more.
Given this, I suspect the date will likely be near the tail-end of the first quarter. Q1 ends on March 31st, and so my money is betting on a date in March. What date exactly? Well, the most common weekday for video games to release in the United States is Tuesday. There are five Tuesdays in March: the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th. Again, I'm firmly convinced DW2 still requires some due polishing, and so will be picking from the later Tuesdays in March. This leaves both the 22nd and 29th as possible candidates for a release date. Personally, I think the 29th is too close to Q2 (April 1st), whereas the 22nd sits neatly at the end of Q1 without actually being at the end of Q1.
Therefore, I predict Distant Worlds 2 will release on the 22nd of March, 2022.
