Australian Beauties II

Post by warspite1 »

Right, so I think its time for some proper Aussie Beauties around here. So, this thread is open for anyone to submit their most beautiful World War II:

- Warships
- Aircraft
- Military Vehicles.

We are talking looks only - what is most pleasing to the eye? It would be helpful if a few words can be added to any submissions to explain what it is that appeals.

One of my favourite aircraft has to be the Grumman Avenger. Why? She is such a purposeful looking aircraft in a stocky, mean punch-packing sort of way. The sort of aircraft that can pack a punch, while taking punishment and remain in the air. Definitely in my top 5.

For the first ship in this thread I post a classic beauty. A true Australian, even though she was built in Britain (I think).

Maybe not a beauty. But I find the Wirbelwind very cool looking.

And a picture of a real beauty. Liked the look of this ship already as a young kid. First WWII ship model I ever bought. And built.

Also, though it was far from perfect, I've always liked the Pershing:

I'm not sure of the origins of this photo, but it's a favorite. Great action shot. Tobruk was the first wargame I learned how to play back in the early eighties.

Another aircraft Top 5 contender has to be the Bristol Blenheim (specifically with this nose). Another aircaft packed with character and quirky design features. Love it.

The T-34 is a good shout, although I've always been partial to the Panther too. T-34 probably edges it to be honest.

I believe this class of ship won the destroyers section of the Australian Beauties competition if I recall correctly. I can't find the AB thread to check - seems to have disappeared completely - but I'm pretty sure this class was at least a finalist. Can't recall which ship would have also been in that final.

Alongside (but of course behind [:)]) the Warspite, the South Dakota is probably my favourite battleship design. She just looks like a thug of a warship. Not as large as the Iowa's and so looking like they've crammed everything into too small a space, she just looks like a lady that can take care of herself.
