Should i buy WitP:AE or Warplan Pacific?

Post by Marc1314 »

Hi, so both games are on sale for roughly the same price just now and i was wondering what one to go for.
I've been thinking about getting WitP for a while as i love WitE and fancy trying a game of the same calibre set in the Pacific theatre.
However Warplan Pacific is much newer game so i'd expect it to be a little nicer to look at and maybe easier to actually get things done in game.

So what do you guys think, has anyone tried both games?
What game should i buy?

If you are a veteran of WitE, I would not give Warplan Pacific a second look. In fact, I would consider Warplan Europe as a first buy in the series.

Being a much older game, WitP:AE is no where near as polished as WitE, but is pretty much the definitive simulation of the Pacific War.

Then again, what do I know? Just my opinions, having played them all.

Marc1314, if you want micromanagement and are willing to put up with legacy issues of a old game then WitP would be the one but you indicated you might like less complexity hassle in your gaming. WP:P is an innovative game engine on a wider scale and is in many ways the opposite to WitP.. It it a very good game and a blast to play. It has its issues but all games do. Why not buy both?

I don't know about Warplan Pacific but WitP costs 16$ (-80%). So you can try to buy both.
Read WitP AAR's, its amazing.

WITP AE if your into the Pacific theatre it's a no brainer. A must have. Nothing else out there like it. Lots of Warplan type wargames around.

Warplan Pacific is less complex and so easier to play.

WitP-AE is a steal at 16 and it a lifetime of gaming. Well with the price. I am still learning it, get the free Sea Bee to help set it up. Plus a new official patch is coming next year perhaps.

Hate to say it but I seriously wouldnt recommend WITP or WITP-AE. They really dont seem to work at all on modern computer systems. Have a look over at the forums at least before buying.

That IS false. I bought me a new PC and the game does work as usual. Where did you get this lunacy from, sorry?

Why Doesn't Matrix update WITP:AE with Chemkid's maps graphics mods and and updated launcher. I have to jump through hoops with switches and such to get it to run at all.

It is very simple. If you change the look of the maps then all of the pictures in the manual with the old maps would have to be redone. The same thing for any other art.

There is the Seabee program to install the game with most if not all of the switches needed.

I think the main deciding point is whether you like games that last a few weeks or a few years.

Oh personal experience in this case. I had immense troubles with what I think was referred to as the 'slowdown' bug - basically rendered the game unplayable. IIRC there were some long threads suggesting various tweaks that might help, but I could never get it working satisfactorily and gave up in the end. My usual opponent had the same troubles I did, and it seemed to be a fairly common experience ... although that's going back a couple of years now so maybe things have moved on.

Greetings Marc1314,
I like Naval Warfare Simulations (NWS) Supremacy at Sea and SSG's Complete Carriers at War (construction set version)

I am considering Matrixgames World in Flames for both Atlantic & Pacific naval, land & air campaigns (no AI yet but not a problem).

Check out my signature I have had no problem running it all on these specs and the ones before these. I just stared a new game Japan vs AI with one of Andy Mac's new scenarios working just fine.

There was and still is plenty of help out there. You might want to start with this thread in the Tech section for WITP:AE.

I know WitP is old, but at this price, I couldnt help but buy it. Im not even sure I'll play it to be honest. But still.
