Favorite Scenarios?

Post by Jagger2002 »

Ok, I have played every scenario now but 82nd Airborne. Current top of my list for scenario is St. Vith. Close behind is Elsenborn Ridge and Skyline Drive. All great fun and highly recommended.

Stavelot is my pick as the best. Elsenborn Ridge and Skyline Drive are very good.
Arracourt honorable mention.

Elsenborn Ridge as the US was a blast.

St. Vith is also the best for me so far, then Bastogne. Will give honorable mentions to Elsenborn and Arracourt for interesting ones too. When I bought the game, I expected the 3 best would be Bastogne, St. Vithi and Elsenborn in that order so it is almost as I expected.

I finally started playing the 82nd Airborne scenario. I put it off because it starts with the Germans in an awkward situation and I didn't have a good sense of the general operational situation. Now that I have started playing it, so far it has been a pretty good scenario. Still haven't finished it but it is fun.

I think my general preference at this time is for scenarios with one or two corps and covering a week or two of action. Having multiple divisions and additional time adds an extra dimension to gameplay but corps+ is not overwhelming and is really easy to handle in terms of units. When I look at the grand campaigns, I kind of shrivel up a bit. It would be nice to have a couple army sized scenarios covering timeframes of 5th Pz or 6th SS army operations. An intermediate step between grand campaign and corps level scenarios.

I think you mean like larger versions of Bastogne and Elsenborn Ridge battles? I would like both of those.

I would like a bigger Bastogne battle so the player can control Manteuffel's full army and avoid the problem of moving on too soon without reducing the town's defenses, and also have objectives further west to tempt an aggressive player to do both or even seal off Bastogne and go all out west instead, so there would be options of strategy for replay value. The terrific danger of Patton's force driving up from the south must be considered so a defense can be set up which is a sort of hindsight-ish manipulation of history but I think it would still be an awful struggle to try and stop the Patton juggernaut. Another German strategy could be to go hard against Patton and try to reduce his attack by countering it and then have Bastogne's capture be worth a lot of points.

West Wall...because I made some stupid errors and arty saved the day for me. The Fritz's are never allowed to sleep. Just playing around with small scenarios for now.

Same here. Say 5th Pz army from 16th through 19th Dec ending as the initial rush on Bastogne fails. And basically a step up in size and complexity falling between the full campaign and the larger corps level scenarios. The tricky part is that the army zone of operation is not fully self contained from activity off map but with assumptions, I am sure a good scenario could be developed.

I don't have a favourite as such, but, I thought I would have a look at "Elsenborn Ridge" again to see what the attraction of it is as I might be missing something.

Needless to say, by the 10th turn, playing as Allies, I had a major victory and thought, that was easy, nothing special or exciting about that.

All I did was after the Axis had advanced, any Allies that had been swept aside to the North and Southern flanks, I advanced them into enemy territory and hooked around the rear of the Axis forces by a few hexs clear of them so as not to be in close contact and positioned them on as many roads and junctions etc that the Axis may be using as supply routes. Even though they was out of supply themselves eventually and could not move, I played "Hold" cards or is it "Defend", they was not attacked and the Axis advance, just ground to a halt.

Try it as the Germans. It is an interesting challenge.

I'm embarrassed to admit that the Simple Editor is so intriguing, I have yet to fully play a stock scenario to finish. However, On the Dinant and Windhund scenarios have been the most fun to mod. [;)]

Is Stavelot not meant to be played as Allies? I don't seem to be able to lose it as Allies. Even if I set the AI on hardest/slowest. Seems impossible not to get a major victory.
