DB development

Post by Gratch1111 »

If you look at the thread of new units/updated units, its a mess. The thread is 245 pages and loads of posts per page. The game is a game for mostly nerds, me being one of them, why not use us for the good of the game. Now I dont know the limitations of the Forum but if I was head of development for this game, here is at least on thing I would do.

Make a primary forum for plattforms, below that are subforums for every country in the game. Ask for 1 user who is interested to be moderator/checker of all entries for that country. Usually that would be someone from that country which unfortunately would mean that they are biased, so have one more moderator to check all entries. As in 1 moderator from India and then have another from China or Pakistan, just examples.

For some countries like China, US and Russia you might have to divide it into more than one subforum, as in US air and navy.

When both moderators have agreed on the entry it goes to the developers who still has to check I guess, but it will still be less than before.

It would be easier for people to see what has already been suggested and hopefully it would makes things easier for developers. It might also work with sensors. weapons etc but that is harder.

I fully agree that separate subforums for each country would be better than current one forum for each database. Research of military matters is inevitably hindered by inaccurate and conflicting data and in a quite a lot of cases before addition to database is done there should be discussion about it.

I cannot speak for developers and I see and highly appreciate how the game has improved from when I have bought at first CMANO and later CMO. Currently as DB requests are so full I have decided not to spam it even more.

There are 195 countries in the world, give or take.

That is a lot of sub-forums, a lot of moderators and a lot of pages that will never (or very rarely) be visited.

What is broken and what is this 'fix' supposed to achieve? The Dev's are busy guys

What would help the most is a working search function on this broke-ass forum. There is a newer parallel forum with a thread-specific search capability.

https://forum.matrixgames.com/viewforum.php?f=9704

Using that, you can quickly see what has been requested.

I have suggested a fix to the db forum for years...several sub-foums.

1) Things that need to be fixed...with references and logic for the fix
2) Things missing from the db...needed for a scenario in development and has references
3) Things missing from the db but might be in for completeness with references and suggested parameters
4) Discussion on db issues. This is where people can talk about news and press releases, or even a disagreement in the above three.

This would keep the unit-porn people out of the discussions for critical fixes. Part of the mess of the existing threads is that there are people whose only purpose in CMO is to get their favorite nation's newest press release for a piece of hardware into the db. It has created a thread that is mostly repeats of press releases with little contribution to the game.

These are all great ideas, we're working on something along these lines right now.

There should also be some definable threshold for posting in the #3. A press release and a grainy pic is kind of weak.

Very nice - had not seen that before!

Sub forums for these would be very useful, manageable and much better for designers to get things added relatively quickly, it happens now but I pity the unfortunate Devs (Rory) that has to sift through.

Well, there are about 140 countries in the game, in how many of those are there really a lot of things happening? 40 tops

So my thought is this.

1/ 10 guys enter a post for Norway.
2/ The primary moderator checks the links supplied as well as others he can find, those he find valid he sets ok. He also adds data that might be missing
3/ A possible second moderator is someone from Sweden or Russia. He checks as well and says ok if the data seems valid. He also adds data to those posts if possible
4/ Of these posts 4 has been found valid for the developers to check and include

Now 2, not including the poster, has checked the data and approved 4 out of 10 posts, as well as added data. Which should mean less to do for developers

For me as a poster its also easier to see if a ship I think should be included has already been added since the number of pages/posts are a lot less

Don't.

Some load outs are already not Country specific and that has the potential to derail nation specific threads.

Can we not drag the nation-specific issues and sniping into this thread? Its been fairly constructive. Lets not turn it into the db thread.

The current forum setup is far from perfect and has evolved over many years to its current state. And, having been created by many "cooks" it is somewhat of a spaghetti code type creature.

Arguably it could be redesigned from scratch to better support Matrix folks but even then it would not make all users happy. Gunner98’s post is a good summarization:
There are 195 countries in the world, give or take.
That is a lot of sub-forums, a lot of moderators and a lot of pages that will never (or very rarely) be visited.

And, as thewood1 points out, there is another (again, not perfect) platform that can be used. (https://forum.matrixgames.com/viewforum.php?f=9704) . RoryAndersonCDT also indicates that this whole issue is being looked at.

Discussion of the OP’s original comments/questions has been productive but, thinly disguised allegations and picking at old scabs is not going to provide any valid information to this thread or any other.

I think the devs got it too. Thanks Wayne!
