Artillery use?

I cannot get on map artillery units to fire: the only message I get 'ready radio', but it does not fire. Also explanation about off map artillery is not clear to me.
Can anyone explain that to me? Thanks.

Have you read manual segments 4.3.6. (Indirect Fire) and 4.6. (Artillery)?
