Stalingrad to Berlin Scernario Error

Post by ImperatorAugustus »

Not sure where to post this. The Leningrad 'pocket' has 135,000 tons of supplies at the start stored, despite being extremely desperate during this time. This has allowed the Soviets in my game to supply over 500,000 men in the 'pocket', while also having more men to the East. In comparison the soviets start with about 200,000k in the 'pocket' at scenario start. The ice road is now open, but still unthinkable to supply this and everything else in the area. This has thwarted by concentrated effort to take Leningrad to limit soviet production and positioning.

That is not actually that much in the grand scheme of things. If you do naval interdiction and cut off further supplies coming across Lake Ladoga, they should run out within 10-15 turns or so.

It is currently turn 8. The ice road just opened, so that is not even an option for several turns.

You are missing the point though. There is no way the soviets could supply and additional 300k+ men in Leningrad. They were struggling as is without German focus. Leningrad didnt fall simply because Germany was focused elsewhere. Right south of the port, where Im at now, has 200+ and 400+ defense cv units.

Do you have any sources for the supply situation at Leningrad being "extremely desperate" at the end of '42? AFAIK the Leningrad Front was a very active participant in Operation Iskra in January '43 where it successfully attacked from the pocket and help break the encirclement. If they had enough supplies for major offensive operations in January I doubt they were extremely desperate in November/December.

In January-February 1942 was the highest mortality rate at 130,000 people per month. Mostly due to the weather. This was with the road of life running at full throttle, by far the most effective supply route. In September of 42 until the opening of the corridor, Leningrad was completely out of energy resources and failed in harvesting timber. 800,000 people, military and civilian, in all of Leningrad proper were left. Multiple disease outbreaks during late 42-43. Germans had massively firebombed the city earlier in the year. Germans had just brought up siege guns with extensive recon of the city in September.

That all sounds plausible, but it doesn't say much about military supply. Stalin had no issue starving a few thousand civilians if it meant the army could be in tip top shape. Just because the civilians of Leningrad were having an awful time didn't necessarily mean the depots were short of artillery shells.

That freight is used for everything though and it does not appear that any units in Leningrad are suffering, and are in fact recovering and reinforcing. Despite the doubling of military personal and the later historical evacuations not happening.
