I emailed him asking for him to grant access so we can download his map mod. He has not posted here since April however so we wait with baited breath on his return.

He has posted earlier this month I do believe. He used to be very active if I remember correctly.

It would be nice if he posted his maps on a website instead of some Google drive crapola where you have to ask permission to get them.....

Strange because I downloaded his Kamikaze map (further down list of threads) earlier today and there was no permission needed for that. I'm liking that version of the map - maybe give it a try?

When somebody creates something wonderful and then disappears along with their artwork. Extremely annoying.

As a newish player looking for better aesthetics, what is the difference between the normal and extended version of these map mods?

It depends on what scenario you are playing. All of the stock scenarios use the normal maps.
Many of the user designed mod scenarios use the extended maps. You have to match the scenario and map type or you will have serious problems.

As far as I know, the AI will have problems using the extended maps because of the new bases.

A mod team composed primarily of former AE Developers created the extended map as an option for those using the "DaBabes" mods, and - as Nomad indicates - a number of other modders have incorporated it. Look here for information and screenshots, so you can see what has changed. You would have no problems whatsoever using this in PBEM, but - as to RJ's point - it's problematic with the scripted AI, since all the new bases are unknown in the scripts.

I always advise new players to be wary of eye candy and extra complexity, because it's hard enough to get up to speed with the base game. The choice, of course, is yours.

Big thanks to MakeeLearn for creating this beautiful looking map and to Evoken for making them available again! I've looked at many of the map art mods over the years, but this is the first one that I've liked enough to install it. Very readable and very beautiful!

My favorite map too , using it for 2 years. Very easy on the eyes compared to stock game map , thanks a lot to Makeelearn for this map!

I'll add a thumbs up here as well. I've tried other maps, but always come back to this one. Makeelearn does a very good job of maintaining the visual separation between the terrain types, so if new players feel they MUST use a map mod, this would be the one.

The important thing to remember for new players that if they are going to change the look of the map, that the pictures in the manual do not change! So if you have a problem don't complain if you picture looks different than what is in the manual.

On the other hand, I have never used the MakeeLearn map as I find it too dark for my liking. BTW, how come MakeeLearn did not get de-avatared with has N.B. Forrest portrait? Probably he is too fast to get caught.
