RE: 13 Jun 44 report

Post by jdsrae »

The game has progressed a week to 19 Jun 44.
The action each day has either seen a huge heavy bomber raid on an airfield in Burma or not much.
B29s are being used to target airfields and not Oil or Fuel production, so far.

Just checked my grandpa's diary and he flew his first op with 51 Sqn (Halifax III) 17 Jun 44.
Just like the Allied heavy bombers in this game, he seemed to fly an op then have days off in between. Lots of "prepared for ops, scrubbed" which would have been due to weather, either for take off or I assume forecasts (or recon) over the target. The game seems to fly most missions regardless of weather. I suppose a perfectionist Allied commander could manually scrub bombing missions if weather was above a certain threshold based on in game reports.
As SolInvictus is trying to manage his airframe fatigue and maintenance, that seems to be keeping heavy bomber ops at about their historical rate.

Anyway, here is the IJN AA locstat summary.
Seeing where the IJN AA guns are has prompted IGHQ to withdraw some IJA AA Regts to potential future Allied targets now, before the Pacific becomes too dangerous to withdraw them easily.

Yeah, that's likely wise.

One further item that did occur to me was that I've often seen the 10cm and 12cm AA guns firing in a coastal defence role when invasions have occurred. They didn't do anywhere near as well as the dedicated CD/DP guns, but every little helps!

It is now 24 Jun 44 in the war, with a similar pattern of a few quiet days, then a B29 night airfield raid.
Aussie tank units have just crossed the border on the Cox's Bazar - Akyab Road, so the re-conquest of Burma has started.
15th Army has mostly withdrawn intact, but the Aussie tanks might still catch a few defenders at Akyab if they move quickly.

IJA reinforcement units are aboard most available xAP, AK and AK-t moving to defensive positions in the Philippines, with other task forces starting to withdraw select high value troops from forward areas.
There are two LST task forces in SEAF now that are withdrawing excess engineers, and an expendable small xAK task force will try to sneak into Port Moresby to withdraw 40th Division.

This is the IJA AA locstat with some units ordered to prepare to be withdrawn and hand AA defence duties over to the IJN.
The units ordered to Manila might upgrade their TOE there before some of them move back to Japan.

It’s uncanny, just when I think I might get a moment to update the AAR a turn arrives!

Low layered CAP has had the effect of ceasing p47 strato sweeps for now.
Allied bombers have gone back to night raids.

VADM Kusaka keeps CV Hiyo with the rest of the task force.
6 days until they make it back to Kure at cruise speed. The Allied subs will probably expect her to head towards Davao or Manila.
I will transfer all pilots off CV Hiyo just in case another Allied sub gets lucky, but flight operations are cancelled due to the damage from that single torp hit, so the aircraft remain at risk.
I can afford to lose the aircraft, but I do not want to lose top quality fighter pilots to subs…

--------------
Interesting combat animation, but ineffective use of Peggys.
This is the first time I’ve seen IJA bombers damage an Allied aircraft!
Also some messages of “Beaufigther can’t catch bomber”
1x Peggy lost due to night CAP +1 to AA fire for zero hits on the airfield.
This was just meant as a bit of a distraction, but won’t be continued.

The Allies have stopped their advance at Cox’s Bazar and have withdrawn at least a full Corps back to Chittagong. Where will they go next?
The Imphal Sector or further back to board ships for an amphibious assault somewhere?
Allied movement arrows towards Imphal could be feints, with an amphib assault a possibility.
What they will do is anyone’s guess, but it is mid-1944 so Allied plans should start to become visible on the map soon.

15th Army has almost fully withdrawn behind the Kaladan River, including 1st Tank Div and 9x Infantry Divisions.
Akyab is being abandoned, but as the Allies aren’t advancing I might leave a token garrison behind to make the Allies fight for it rather than taking it by easy paradrop.
If the Allies had of continued their advance here they would have trashed all of 15th Army, but now the heavily disabled Divisions (3-4 of them) all have a good chance to withdraw and start their recovery.

-------------
I noticed a sudden spike in recon activity over Victoria Point yesterday so the Support Div put to sea. Very lucky!
This is the location of HQ 2nd Fleet, positioned to support potential IJN operations in the Bay of Bengal or Andaman Sea.
Those operations are unlikely to proceed now, so a few ASW capable ships will move to collect this SupDiv and move them south out of B29 range.

I had moved a FB Chutai to Chumphon during the last orders phase and set them to LRCAP50% range 0, but they didn’t fly.
I have noticed before that night CAP doesn’t fly the same turn as the unit moves to a new base, and this is another example of that.

2x ACM are burning wrecks so probably won’t survive. There were a few port and fuel hits but there is no damage showing.
The ACMs are worth 3 points each, so I need 3x B29s to crash on the way home or be written off for this to be called a draw.
The 8cm DP guns of the 25th Special Base Force didn’t seem to hit anything.
The B29s were at 8k’ and the 8cm T88 has a ceiling of 23600’.

------------
Mention in Despatches for MAJ Nakagaki and his 16 Engineer squads at Anshan.
They’ve been working on the airfield since Dec 1941 and just got it to size 6.
For that whole time the men of the 4th Manchukuo District Division haven’t once offered to lend a hand.

If the support squads have 10 men each, the engineer squads must have 8 men each to sum to 268.
For some reason I thought support squads had 15 men each, but that maths doesn’t work.
The 3rd FF Const Unit might need some help to get the airfield to size 8 to help cover Mukden before the Soviets invade.
