Hornet is drawing torpedoes...here we got hit twice. So I check her Captain, and I never swapped out the excellent air operation Captain for a naval Captain. Rookie mistake.

Continue landing troops and bulldozers.

If I recall correctly an SPS 0 base can never benefit from Naval Support no matter what the port is built up to, correct?

China: The IJA Tank Apocalypse Army shock attacks. One of our Corp stayed in Reserve No pursuit mode...

Ground combat at 80,50 (near Changteh)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 20958 troops, 524 guns, 1465 vehicles, Assault Value = 799

Defending force 37596 troops, 138 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 551

Japanese adjusted assault: 712

Allied adjusted defense: 394

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), disruption(-), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+)

Japanese ground losses:
567 casualties reported
Squads: 9 destroyed, 100 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 36 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 32 disabled
Vehicles lost 79 (2 destroyed, 77 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
508 casualties reported
Squads: 3 destroyed, 78 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Assaulting units:
1st Tank Division
2nd Tank Division
17th Tank Regiment
Guards Tank Division
Tonei Hvy Gun Regiment
4th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
5th Ind.Hvy.Art Battalion
11th Ind.Art.Mortar Battalion
2nd Ind. Mountain Gun Regiment
8th Ind.Hvy.Art. Battalion
11th Army
14th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
7th Ind.Hvy.Art. Battalion
15th Ind.Medium Field Artillery Regiment
13th Ind.Art.Mortar Battalion
13th Ind.Hvy.Art Battalion

Defending units:
7th Chinese Corps
18th Chinese Corps
70th Chinese Corps
79th Chinese Corps

Our three primary corp are in decent shape but have high disruption. Another corp arrives tomorrow.

The 4th Guards Division is getting bombed a fair bit by Airacobras and 2E. Moving to cut off their line of supply.

Looks like heavy IJA reinforcements to Lashio...flying in the monster 6th Chinese Corp to bolster the defense.

Image

With respect to Burma, Japan has a lone regiment moving into the clear from Shwebo...Allied bombers can absolutely pummel anything in the open like that. Baffling moves, unless he wants to on purpose draw the bombers there...

Lost one Airacobra strafing...out of 100 in the attack.

IJ force build up at Darwin....

Seriously, I don't think I could ask for Japan to allocate their forces better than what they are -- in that they benefit the Allies.

I could care less if Japan holds Darwin...I hope he goes for Socotra.[;)]

Sept 8, 1942

Our 2nd bombardment of Tabby, the TF was shooting for a double bombardment yesterday with remain on station orders & very short travel time (alas not to be), but the bombarded this night and now return to dot base to rearm (surely this an exploit?) and will be ready for tomorrows bombardment.

I used to think daily bombardments like this were a huge exploit as the naval guns couldn't take such sustained firing...but I have since seen articles on replacement barrels and such so it is not as huge an exploit...plus it seems fairly equal across both sides.

I watched the replay fairly closely today, and noticed that my float planes flying from Arorae did not spot any Iboats at night...need to check if they flew and what the weather was, but perhaps using them on night naval search isn't helping to damper the Iboat threat down and perhaps they would be better utilized elsewhere...although they are keeping an eye out for small enemy SAG raiders.

So, this is a pretty touch and go fight...it looks like I have worn down one tank division, plus the 1st Tank isn't looking too healthy either.

The 48th Corp just arrived, in reserve pursuit mode and has a decent leader...additionally, I put one of the bigger corp (with 80% disruption) into reserve no pursuit mode too. The original corps have about 50% disablements and high disruption...so I might lose the hex, and it would be a complete shame to have a fresh corp with 0 disruption and 0 disablements be forced to retreat without ever jumping out of reserve no pursuit mode.[:(]

IJA tanks getting a workout today![;)]

What is a complete shame, or perhaps a clever plan, there are 0 Chinese AT or ART units in these fights. They are elsewhere, digging in, creating range cards, etc...

Some of the troops are recreated Zombie units with no large guns whatsoever.

I am not sure I can pull this off, by my artillery arrived yesterday, get probed the IJA today, and hopefully the IJA will attack tomorrow...when the bulk of my troops arrive.

Now IJ has 9 DL on Chittagong, and knows there is a huge force here...and I have pulled this trick off continually in this game so they might be a bit shy...but here is hoping everything works!

Japan has been very cooperative so far...

So, what happens when a LCU gets withdrawn. Does the equipment go to the pools, or is it random or based on supply or disablements? Or just gone?

Might dictate how I use my Stuarts here! Of course it might be pointless if the IJ force a retreat or shatter the Rgt in tomorrow's fight.

Ground combat at 80,50 (near Changteh)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 19923 troops, 524 guns, 1463 vehicles, Assault Value = 677

Defending force 43990 troops, 138 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 750

Japanese adjusted assault: 343

Allied adjusted defense: 271

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), disruption(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
315 casualties reported
Squads: 17 destroyed, 5 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 8 disabled
Engineers: 4 destroyed, 6 disabled

Allied ground losses:
1300 casualties reported
Squads: 5 destroyed, 152 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 14 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Guns lost 16 (1 destroyed, 15 disabled)

It is interesting to see the "At Target 0%" prep line. That is not really a bug, since there is no base here, but rather a sign that it is a zombie unit created automatically at Chungking from a previously destroyed corp. Just an oversight on my part.[;)]

We are building here, albeit not as fast as I would have liked. Running two operations, the Marcus Invasion and this Gilberts one is very taxing on our forces. Not so much combat ships, but amphibious ships and ASW and CD and Mines and having forces forward in staging areas. Enough ands for you?[;)]

The primary concern is that the KB shows up here before we are built up enough...but then something else would have to give...Darwin, Burma, Diego & Ceylon, etc.

At sea...not shown are the minelayers, cd guns and naval support units, dedicated supply ships, AVD, replenishment tf (Copahee) etc...

This is a smash and grab invasion....meaning it might only get very light CV presence. I was debating about bringing the Long Island to the party....but her abysmal speed, no AA, would probably doom her in this application (in my experience most AFBs lose her in 1942 sometime doing very risky stuff like this). No thanks.[:)]

Different players, different oppinions, that's what makes this game and especially PBEM so great. To me Darwin is one of the priority targets, as it guards the soft underbelly of the SRA. I wouldn't care about all those tiny pieces of land 10,000 miles away from the SRA or Japan you make such an effort and your carriers take torps for (to me) literally no gain. [:)]

Sept 9th, 1942

Really good conditions for Iboats, but we seem to have weathered the night phase ok...I did put the float planes from bases to daytime search.

Our bombardments do well on Tabby, very low DL on Tabby but we do find out that the 65th Bde is here. If memory serves that is an air mobile unit.

Should get our first functional runways up tomorrow.

Japan is really hitting this hex, in support of the IJA Tank Apocalypse...Stuarts should arrive this turn if they jump out of reserve no pursuit mode that is.

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid spotted at 20 NM, estimated altitude 9,000 feet.

Major attacks on the road above Ankang, but the major Tank Divisions west of Changteh don't attack...our Stuarts are now present, and another Corp will arrive in Combat mode tomorrow.

Nail biting time, all my assault value is in reserve no pursuit mode...will they jump out and fill the lines as the Japanese rush forward....or will it be a route without a shot fired?

High risk!

Not all of our troops arrived either...

That Australian 6th Division is a beast with around 72 25 pounders and 75 2 pounder AT guns in it I believe...

PPS: I got curious how the 205th American FA Bn got here, if I recall they start the game on ships in the Pacific? From the web:

The 2nd Battalion, 148th Field Artillery Regiment arrived Australia in May 1942, and at some point was redesignated the 205th Field Artillery Battalion. It fought on Biak and in the Philippines.

Image

How many Guards Divisions does Japan get in this mod? the 6th? sheesh...
