Thinking of getting have question

Post by Antmf_slith »

I am fairly new to the genre and do have games like WiTE WiTP AE and I also have DC Barbarossa, But they are way to big in scope for me right now. So I was wondering how this game is and how big in scope it is. I honestly didnt like DC Barbarossa because I didnt like the decisions. I just want to play a great wargame that is deep ( Not to deep just yet) and have fun. Please give a brother some advice...

Antmf,

This game is the absolute epitome of easy to play and hard to master. The games you have mentioned having, especially WitP and WITE are on a completely different level of complexity so you should not worry about that. In addition as mentioned in another thread these games have 4 tutorials (called bootcamps) that are amongst the best wargame tutorials out there. The manual even has a section for each bootcamp walking you through it so by the end you are familiar with pretty much all the game mechanics.

To give you an idea, the low complexity scenarios of this game, I can complete a turn in about 5 to 10 minutes (if that). The higher complexity ones involving a lot of units may take a fair amount longer, maybe 20 to 30 minutes but that obviously will vary from player to player. If you can complete a single turn of WitP in less than a couple of hours you are some kind of genius in my book :-)

The forums here are hugely helpful as well.

Hope that gives you some idea.

Fun, guaranteed!

Scope, you can start small and get bigger. You can order the scenarios by complexity and I'd highly recommend doing that and working through the easiest ones first, which is exactly what I did 20 years ago with East Front.

To get you into the game, you've got some great Bootcamp scenarios, plus on the YT channel Jason playing through them. I'd recommend following the step by step guide to them in the manual, then replaying them without that guidance.

I'd say as a game it's not complex. I've never got my head round Operational Art of War and I think the Campaign Series games are way more transparent.

There definitely are some BIG scenarios that can take days to play through but you can avoid those till you're ready for them. I got totally addicted to East and West Front when they first came out and always avoided the massive scenarios... until I discover how brilliant they are too (and have been addicted ever since!)

Like the others said, you will be fine!

However, this Campaign Series is very different from the others, in that "victory" will require you to follow instructions (sometimes to the letter) to achieve your goals.

The care put into the scenarios make it a *much* deeper and richer experience, but there may be a frustration level for certain players.

Personally, I don't like the step-by-step "here's what you need to do to win" aspect, but that doesn't in any way affect my enjoyment of the game. It will be years before I even approach a burn-out with this game, especially with the excellent editors.

^It is true Bootcamp scenarios in particular are scripted to have the player to follow a certain path, but it is done for a reason, so that all aspects of each bootcamp can be put into practice.

Week in* scenarios then have the computer opponent operating at the dedicated daily operations areas, take an objective elsewhere, there is a penalty. Week in* scenarios are being revised for the next update to be more informative of this aspect.

As for all other scenarios, as far as I know, they are not "scripted" in traditional sense of the word that there is a path that must be followed, instead computer opponent reacts to battle field events, and when on offensive, selects from a variety of options. It is possible of course with historical scenarios that some battles have less good options available to player than others.

Just take the plunge and get it. Its more tactical that WiTE and much more accessible without being dumbed down. The tool bar can look intimidating if you have never played before but you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly. The community is pretty good answering questions if you have any.

Thanks Crossroads for your post and clearing things up. I was wrong to insinuate all the scenarios are so heavily scripted for victory. Fact is, I haven't gotten to them yet! Boot Camps can be tough - as in real life - and Boot Camp 4 especially so, but they are there to train the recruits.
