Convoy protection not working properly

Post by BJGeary »

There are two problems in the attached image:

1. The convoy is supposed to be fully protected with 10 escorts, therefore shouldn't it be immune to losses?
2. The lane had 2 DDs nearby (and two more that aren't in the image, but perhaps out of range) prior to the sub attack yet I'm not getting the 2% escort bonus that I should have gotten.

#1 no it just means it has the best protection.

#2 you need escorts in the zone to get the bonus.

The way escorts protect convoys is by damaging subs and destroying them. The subs then do not go out to sea as often as they have to be repaired. So overall it lowers how much damage the convoy lanes take. It works. 1939-1941 you are taking a beating and have to manage it as the UK. 1942 it is about even, 1943 you should have an advantage. If fully protected it should be a losing exchange for the subs. 1944+ they are crushed. All this assuming you invest in the technology.

Please take another look at the image attachment. Per the following, from the game manual: "Sub Hunters – Naval fleets on a convoy hex icon will protect all friendly convoys routes within a 24 hex radius by adding a bonus to any escorts protecting those routes vs subs within the radius." I had at least 2 DDs within the radius, as clearly shown in the image, and I had 10 escorts assigned which is also clearly shown in the image, and I didn't get the escort bonus (which should have been 2%).

Is this being fixed with the upcoming patch? I am not getting the Sub Hunter bonus in the Indian Ocean, the same as the OP.

What is the range of convoy protection? 24 hexes or 12 hexes?

Good idea. I thought it was a 24 hex radius. I tested with less than a 12 hex and still no bonus.

Indeed there is a problem. This DD group should add a Sub Hunter bonus.

I first noticed the problem in the Indian Ocean with UK convoys to the Aussies, but it also happens in the South Pacific with US convoys to the Aussies and Kiwis.

Mystery has been solved. the game is right, the rules manual is wrong.

Due to WPP having twice as many ships as WPE this is how it goes.

2 patrol groups +1%...WPE this is 1 group for 1%
1 CV +1%...WPE this is 2%
1 land based air 2% (because they are still the same size)

so 1 DD group doesn't do anything. But since I know what the next post is I will adjust it so 1 DD group adds +0.5% in the 1.00.07 patch.

Question: if you place 2 DD units in the same hex does that count as 2 groups or 1 group for purposes of convoy protection? IOW, can you stack units and still get the benefit of multiple groups?

All right, scale problem. Thanks

Stacking two Destroyer or CL/DD counters in the same hex gives the 1% bonus.

This is a big help - thanks to all for figuring this out.
