Submarines and AI

Post by Schatten »

Hi all,
I encountered something strange. Playing Scenario 1 and 2, as Alles and as Japan v. AI if i start than Subs show up like they should. Japanese at US east coast, Pearl, Sydney, Calcutta etc. and US Subs if i play Japan around Japan, Burma etc. For some weeks they are here till they use their torps or fuel and than they...disappear.
I never saw them back, very very rare a Japanese Sub at Calcutta or Auckland and that was it, no US subs at all.

If i change to head on and peek into other side i see than 3 or 4 subs at defensiv mission (for us 3 around PH 1 at Sydney) and all other sit in Port. For Japanese there were like 30 of them in Truk and the other in Singapur, for Allies over 20 in PH and other spread around, east coast, Balboa, Calcutta.

At last PH were full with Fuel and supply so that was not the problem. And the ones at Balboa and East Coast looks like never were moved after spawn.

Anyone has a idea what happens here and why the AI dont use them after they went back to refuel/reupply?

Japanese subs on the US East coast? The AI is getting crafty.

I'm afraid it's just typical AI behavior for the most part. It tends to put a paltry few subs on offensive patrol. More on defensive patrols, and a lot idle in port.

too bad, pretty much as i thinked so nothing can be done to fix it. Basically you can skip the whole ASW part as after 1 month you barely see a enemy sub no matter Japan or Allies

Two ideas:
At game start before the first turn, set Auto-Sub Operations to OFF.

Check the All TFs button at the top of the screen and ensure you have not turned off the Sub Ops display

I think you misunderstood. I have Auto-Sub off. But what i mean are the Subs of the enemy AI. They sit in Ports and doing nothing, the AI dont sends them out to fight me.

The AI is trying to lull you into complacency. You really have to watch it, sometimes the AI spies on our plans right here in the forum!

I've seen the same thing in the early war (say up to April/May 42), but from then on the Japanese AI sends regular patrols to the Solomons, Pearl, the Burma/India theatre and all up and down the West Coast. And they position some where you might think it would be safe to send unescorted vessels - and you would be wrong. ;)

That is with the updated AI, and even though I'm using an Ironman variant, that sort of improved AI is probably part of the updated Scen 1 & 2 as well.

What do you mean with updated AI? a mod?
I just checked again after 1 week ago (ig now September 1942) the Plunger show up South of Osaka. But a look at Allied side shows still all Submarines except 4 (3 in defensive Patrols and Plunger at offensive Patrol) in Ports, 20 alone in PH that has 400k Supplys and 400k Fuel , so that cannot be a issue.
So far AI simply dont uses Submarines as soon their initial Patrol is over, no matter allies or Japan AI

See this thread: https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 8&t=340021

Unfortunately, an AI update can't be retrofitted into an existing campaign but requires a restart.
