PT: The Ukraine Crisis

Post by AdmiralSteve »

I usually don't get involved in big scenarios, creating or playing, but here I am. I ended up with a scenario that follows the current events in Ukraine in a basic sense; Russia invades Ukraine. Yet in my scenario design travels I have arrived at this point with a 600+ unit scenario and with cruise missiles flying about, it can get to 900 and my machine (GPU AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT VRAM 6128 MB GDDR6 1500 MHz) gets sluggish.

So I didn't get to put in objectives all over the map as the number of platforms would have had to been reduced just to get it to run on my machine. So I've negotiated with myself (and subsequently lost  ) and did a few things. First the Blue side has been placed in primarily an offensive position while the Red side goes on defense. With this train of thought, the Blue side has a slight advantage of more aircraft (277 vs 213. This may be incorrect as I got tired of keeping track.) while the Red side has a distinct advantage of SAM units. The Red Side has the duty of protecting its offensive ground weapons (that are not used in the scenario and are more in-place for targets) by its available aircraft and SAM battalions.

Second, with the number of platforms involved I decided to limit the geographical location of the targets for the Blue side to attack to primarily one, at Donestk. Having said that their are many targets for the Blue side to have to neutralize yet 90% are located within the same geographic area.

Third, do to the shear amount of time I've spent on it with watching news, reading articles, designing the scenario and a few play tests and my brain turning to mush, its time for the community to test it. I'm not big on Lua which I understand would add a lot of functionality to it. I've had the unfortunate joy of being off of work since the 11th to do this and that joy is on the cusp of ending. I go back to work tomorrow. So I've run out of time and cannot engross myself into learning it any more than I have.

So now that the story of my life over the last 16 days is finished, I'll leave with you the scenario. I'll have to give a definitive development stage of "beta" as their are no orders or clearly laid out objectives for the Blue side, the only playable side. My concern at this point is to see if my struggles to attack the Red units at Donestk are real and is even feasible. So if you do play this, I'm interested in hearing how you can defeat the Red SAM units at and near the objective as well as the Red CAP and Intercept missions that have been set up. And if you have time, neutralize the armor at Donestk.

Thanks to all that immerse themselves in the play test.
