Tactical Employment of Infantry Guns?

Post by Golf33 »

Guys,

Does anyone know if the Germans' normal tactical employment of their 75mm and 150mm infantry guns was in the direct-fire role, or in the indirect-fire role?

Thanks

G'Day Steve,

their primary role was direct fire, ie verses MG posts and strong points. They had HE, hollow charge (vs tanks) and smoke ammunition.

Discussions on the Battlefront board indicated that most/all? also had the nessessary gear to fire indirect if needed... but it was impossible to determine how often this was done.

The 13th coy of each Inf Reget has a TOE level of 6 75 inf guns and 2 150mm inf guns. Frequently in the west these were Russian pieces.

Cheers

My impression was that these were almost exclusively used to fire directly. This may have been one of those things that changed from division to division. Since most divisions operated below stength it seems that having only 3-5 small guns firing indirectly would be a waste and this would motivate commanders to use them in the direct fire role.

Good, that tallies with what I've been able to find and the patch reflects this employment.
