Any chance ground combat will be updated?

Post by Ekaton »

I've just created a small hypothetical scenario centred around the defence of Brovary in Ukraine. Ground warfare is incredibly unrealistic for so many reasons:

1) Ground movement is the same regardless of terrain. Tanks are sailing through dense forests. They don't keep to roads, either.
2) Tank shots travel like artillery shells. They take a very long time to reach the enemy tank which is absolutely odd. IRL they only take a few seconds. This is probably the most unrealistic thing in the simulator which prevents it from modelling ground warfare.
3) Unit losses are through the roof. Artillery can massacre infantry so easily, no matter the terrain or the lack of proper F/Os.
4) Counter battery is absolutely too easy. MLRS shouldn't be able to destroy two batteries in seconds.
5) I wish there was at least rudimentary AI for ground units. Without manually setting all the waypoints, you can't expect them to behave in any sort of plausisble way.
6) SPAs seem to be firing way too fast. Is there any data behind it?

Overall, I'm quite disappointed with the engine. I know it was designed with air/naval combat in mind, but it seems seriously lacking.

A test of GM-30 Smerch sounds like an overkill. It can easily destroy 6 platoons of Russian tanks if you set it to 12 rounds per unit. It doesn't sound plausible.

I would like to see some work on the ground combat aspect as well.
An infantry unit should not be able to move through/past an enemy for instance.

That said , I'm not so sure that they are working on ground combat features or if they plan to.
Info on this seems to be limited.

I really hope that Ground Combat will continue to be developed. It's so fun to have combined ops with air/naval/ground. It's an essential part of the game. In my opinion, lots have been already done for ground combat and I'm having a lot of fun with it but of course lot still remains to be done ... Devs should definitely continue their efforts in this direction.

Hi Ekaton,

We have considerable plans for expanding both the detail and the scope of ground operations. However there is also still a lot to be done on the air/nav/space/cyber/joint domains, and every bit of work done on ground ops has to be subtracted from work on these items. So there are always trade-offs involved.

Also consider that there are already many excellent ground-ops games out there (some of them available by MG), but air/nav and joint-domain titles are few and far between.

I was, however, puzzled by your reference that:
Ground movement is the same regardless of terrain. Tanks are sailing through dense forests. They don't keep to roads, either.
First, some background on the current state of ground ops in CMO: https://command.matrixgames.com/?p=4982

So:
1) Using roads is not yet part of the ground AI logics. Someday hopefully. The challenge is not doing it on a 200x200km map, but doing it GLOBALLY.
2) Ground units do suffer mobility-wise, both from terrain slope and terrain type (land cover). Perhaps you have not enabled the "terrain effects" option in the scenario settings ?
