Economic system is broken: Resources have no impact since far too abundant

Post by Arcurus »

Resources have no impact since far to abundant.
Since i wanted that resources have some meaning I made a custom game with reducing mining rate of all mining engines to 20%

Still i never ever encountered one resource shortcoming and i build with all stations and planets that i had all the time.
The changes to mining engines where displayed right in technology screen and ship design.
Either the changes to mining arnt applied or even with a 80% reduction of mining rate resources never fall short and therefore are nearly meaningless.

Its nice to have a economic system, but currently it seems completely meaningless...

I have the direct opposite experience.

If you don't paint all available map in your color and use smaller galaxy with lots of AI you will have shortages. And if you start colonising and rising pops especially.

More than that I never have enough luxury for my planets after the first hundred of years.

Exactly. You will have enough resources with 1-3 planets and bunch of mining stations. But later you will have short comes - I have 130 colonies, hundreds of mining stations ..... but when new hyperdrive happens or new level of ship hull ... then shipyards become full of ships and resources are gone.

FWIW in four games so far, i don't think i've ever had a strategic resource shortage except in the very early game, or for a newly colonised planet that's not had a chance for freighters to arrive.

Luxury resources is a totally different story though - always seems to be a market for those pretty much.

Sounds like a lot of people are experiencing one extreme or the other. For me, it has been boom and bust in either order for varying resources. At the start, I had a big problem with caslon, and an overabundance of polymer. A bit later I was really struggling with polymer and very slowly making up my deficit on caslon a bit. Now I have caslon coming out of my ears and polymer just about meeting demand; along with a persistent shortage of hexodorium, which I assume is very common as tech for larger ships and modules is unlocked.

Sometimes I strongly suspect there are some irregularities with how the resources tab is reporting production and demand. At least with caslon I seem to remember one of the patches fixed something which might account for the gross overproduction I am seeing reported now.
