The Churchill IV's with the 75mm(I think that must be what you mean by a 3" since I couldn't find any with that gun, 3" actually works out to 76.2mm), didn't come in until 1943. By then they were facing Tigers so it seemed to be still a game of catch-up for the Brits. :)
I think he was referring rather to the 3" howitzer first Churchills used to have in hte front of the hull and which proved quite useless so it was in later models replacet by the BMG. But I'm not sure.

BTW was there ever any project of arming a Churchill with the 17pdr?

Yep, the result was the Black Prince. An enlarged Churchill.

In a current PBEM, I've got a lone T34/85 with 10 points of damage, and he's STILL moving and shooting.

Nobody on his side knows this 'cause his radio's out.
he still has a BMG but he can't hit doodly with it - no fire control
He moves - 5!! I think the engine has had a couple of hits.

I'm not sure about the toolbox (how do you check that?) or the crew (I forgot to look)

2 weapons
1 fire control
1 radio
1 (?) toolbox
2 engine hits
3 (?) crew

It can be done.

Yes I did mean the Churchill I. I don't know about it in RL but in SPWaW it is pretty good.

7 engine dmg to Opel Blitz, each with BAR, from behind!!! I guess they took out every cylinder and the last bullet was for a diesel pump. LOL!

Another being a GAZ with some 6 turret damages. The driver's sidearm took a beating!!![X(]
