Airfield Attack Tactics

Post by Graymane »

Which kind of air units do you feel are best for airfield attacks? If it helps to limit the scope, German aircraft in WW2. I can use fighters, fighter-bombers and various bombers. My initial thoughts are to use fighters or FB on hexes with fighters and no AA then bombers on hexes with AA assets in place.

I use a mix of F/Bs and level bombers for the attack, fighters for air cover. Normally I’ll use them sparingly on minimize losses and monitor their proficiency. Once proficiency builds into the 80’s you can up the loss tolerance and inflict heavier casualties on the enemy.

What you don’t want to do is attack when readiness/supply is low since this has a big impact on the unit’s ability to attack and defend. You also do not want to sustain heavy casualties. Replacements will dilute unit proficiency and you’re back to square one.

I tend to only use airfield attacks either if the other force has really severe air shock, or if I have excess replacements of aircraft.

It often happens that scenarios where one force has air superiority have excess replacements for fighters, as they take few combat losses and the game doesn't account for non-combat losses. In this case it can be productive to make airfield attacks with fighters, but only against other fighter units, as this will force units which may otherwise be in reorganisation or resting to engage in air combat. Airfield attacks with fighters against bombers tend not to do much damage as the bombers don't engage in air combat and so only the AP strength of your fighters is used, which is normally very low.
