Quirky Logistics?

Post by LuckyLooser »

Hey guys,

I am having kind of an issue in my mid-game (although it is rather consistent, so I guess its my fault...).

The following happens:
1) I am having a lot of mining facilities getting just about all luxury resources one could want. The storage of the mines is overflowing - supply is not an issue
2) Some of the mines can be far away, some are very close
3) For some reason my goods don't reach my colonies - even if the mine is in the next system
4) There are next to no losses to pirates or fighting, attacks are minimal and not inhibiting my flow (tried bribing the pirates but to no avail in terms of logistics)

Now I have been watching my freighters for a while and I get the feeling they are just too few to keep up. Especially once there are mines that are far away. They fly forever to get something while the colony runs dry und just about everything. The only colony that is halfway consistenly supplied is my homeworld. But even that one is jumpy (which a homeworld should never be imho)

Now am I doing something wrong? Having mines far away shouldn't be a problem as this always happens once your empire grows.
Is there a way to increase the number of freighters? As they are part of the private economy I didn't really find a way to do so. The private economy sits on a pile of cash (> 2 billion) so money is not the problem.

Should I increase target stock to motivate my freighters to procure larger amounts per tour and therefore make fewer trips? How can I get the AI to be more "conservative" about stock keeping, or do I have to set it manually? Should I tinker on the freighter designs and make them faster with more cargo capacity?

Open to suggestions here. I'll post screens and the save if you tell me what you want to see :)

P.S. sorry if my english is a little bumpy. Not a native here ;)

Cheers

Did you research higher storage and get the larger civilian ships?

Edit: Researching civilian ships makes a lot more freighter construction

It is pointless. Even the biggest cargo ships will load like a hundred pieces of resources and that's it. Even if they CAN load more they will not, because of how colony demand works. You can prove it yourself if you look at the freighters and their load at civilian->freighters.

Also usually only fuel transports get full load, so you still need big ships for that.

My ships have no fuel because the freighters are failing to keep my hw supplied. Just like DW1 unfortunately.

I noticed for luxury goods, If you get trade aggrements with anyone, your colonies will start requesting goods that you don't have over goods you are drowning in, and it seems to request goods that they don't actually want to trade, or that are unreachable.

For example, if you discover a new independant on the other side of the galaxy and automatically get a trade aggrement, your colonies may start requesting goods that the colony has on hand, but doesn't even produce, so they both cannot reach you even if they wanted, but they also wouldn't trade you those luxury goods because they don't produce them and have like 300 on hand. Your colonies will start requesting luxury goods they will never get, if you then cancel all the trade aggrements you have, my colonies started requesting luxuries I was producing and there development shot back up to 120.

In my experience trade aggrements are horrible in every way, I never get a meaningfull amount of money, and all my colonies start requesting luxuries I will never get, instead of the ones i'm overflowing with in my own empire.

Which may explain why the boskarans seems to dominate over the other ai's every game I play.

Yes to both. Now that you say it - actually my supply seems to get worse the farther I get in tech. That might be a coincidence though as tech progression goes hand in hand with mid-game.
I have the feeling anway that the number of freighters does not increase with tech but actually decreases. I am having many more small freighters in early game than total freighters (small + medium + large) in late geame. but again that might be just a feeling.

Does anyone know how the private economy calculates how many freighters to build? Maybe the algorithm is borked...

That might be it, I tried to improve the situation by handing out trade agreements to just about everyone. I will try cancelling them and see how it goes. Thanks for the insight.
