Unable to colonize ancient slave colony (mild spoilers)

Post by randal7 »

The tooltip tells me I am not able to colonize the ancient slave colony (or mars either) because they are out of colonization range. I have a colony just outside the nebula the planet is in, so I don't see how it is out of range. I have colonized a planet in the same type of nebula before with no issue. Is this working as intended, maybe as part of the story line, or is it bugged?

Saw the same thing for another late game story site inside a nebula. It has 90% suitability and is right next door to my other colonies but still "outside range", which is set to 300M. Similarly, the auto-queue commands for various orbital bases inside nebula systems also claim they're "beyond construction ship fuel range", although in this case I can at least manually command a constructor to build bases with the right click menu.

No such luck with colony ships.

I think it's bugged. In one of my Human games, another empire on the other side of the galaxy tried to colonize it or invade it. Suddenly it became mine. So I gained this free colony on the far side of the galaxy without doing anything or meeting them prior.

Do your ships have Ion Shielding?

Ships without proper Shielding will get Stuck in Ion and Gravitic Storms. And Home Systems are always in at least one of the two.
While teh T3 Ion Sheat Armor is enough, the Designer only Auto-installs the much bigger Ion Shield component.

I think so? I sent construction ships manually to build stations inside the nebula, and had a loaded colony ship parked over the desired planet.

Do not guess - verify.

The designer is rather inconsistent with installing Ion Shields in any small hulls.
Just because some have Ion Shields, does not mean all have them. Or even enough.

I keep reporting it. I hope they turn Storm level Ion Protection into a passive or a dedicated slot.

I guess that same incident happened in my current game. It totally ruined my immersion, since I am still researching Gerax hyperdrive and only explored a tiny portion of the surrounding area of my homeworld.

I've got ion defense of about 30 (with the ion shield installed) and I still can't colonize these systems.

"Does not work" has never been a sufficient problem description.

Please be precise what is happening or not happening. Maybe add a savegame or images.

I had a similar issue until I realized I hadn't actually loaded any colonists onto the ship.

Regarding Ion defence. All you need is 10 in ion defence and you can go into nebulas. This can be achived with ion shield (Not recomended as it takes up valuable slots in freighters, mining ships etc... Or you can research the bit more expensive (Research wise) ion armor. I always go for this.

About the range inside nebulas. Sadly it´s like a timebubble, you travel at a slower speed but the range is calculated as if you go at normal speed. So the distance in a nebula, though short on the map is huge for meassuring colony distance and also range for construction ships (The later will eventualy be overcome by tech) but not colony range. I have found out that you need to get up to and around 400M to get a chance to colonize these planets. Below i havent had much luck with it.
