Bases assaulted today: Batoe-eilanden (dot base west of Sumatra)

SS Finback fired at, but missed, BB Yamato escorting the evacuation TF to Koepang. Yamato's TF got one ASW hit on KXII later.

The Allies withdrew 3 brigades from the hex south of Moulmein. Could this be the Tavoy invasion force?

Bases captured today: Batoe-eilanden

I-5 sank after getting hammered several days ago at Tabby.

B-17s bombed Rabaul and other bases. The Allies lost 13 of them today; 6 to air-to-air combat, 4 to flak, and 3 were operational losses. At least according to the intel loss report.

I screwed up the orders for the evacuation of 48 Div from Koepang. The division loaded and then immediately unloaded. I didn't think that would happen due to loading undocked at an uncontrolled port. But the unit is so small that it did. The orders were changed and we'll try again.

Vehicle production was turned back on.
Ki-61-Ib Tony R&D advanced from May to Apr '43.
B6N1 Jill R&D advanced from Feb to Jan '43.

The Allies landed troops at Car Nicobar (south of Port Blair). The base is defended by a very small fragment of an infantry regiment.

CVL Ryujo merged with the Hiryu/Soryu TF at Eniwetok.

The 2 surrounded Chinese corps were attacked -

I currently have 60 Vals per month in production, but they are being replaced by D4Y1 Judys at the rate of 90 per month. For anyone reading this, any suggestions for changing the Vals? All land-based bombers have been in short supply, Betties, Sallies, Helens, Nells. Since I have the armored Helen, that would be a good choice, but there are only 4 units (although the Sallies can be changed without PP expenditure). Fifty G3M3 Nells are being produced, but only 30 of the other 3 bombers.

Edit to add: The 48 Div was successfully evacuated from Koepang. The unit will go to Soerabaja to rebuild where a HQ is located with plentiful supply. But it is likely to be a long process.

Yamato's bombardment damaged several SBDs, TBFs, and Banshees making them unavailable to attack the invasion or supporting BB TFs. I split Yamato from Mutsu to have it bombard today, saving Mutsu for tomorrow, to damage the facilities to preclude entrenchment.

Edit to add: In China our Tojos turned their attention from Changteh (captured yesterday) to Chihkiang and downed 7 Warhawks in several sweeps, losing 10 of ours. The shock attack on the 2 surrounded corps near Loyang improved to 1:1 from 1:2.

I-168 hit a mine at/near Munda (friendly?) and sank.

The capture of Changteh some days ago drastically changed the Chinese supply posture. East of Changteh at Ichang Chinese supply will only arrive twice a week (I think) with a supply number of 33 measured from Chungking (see the white numbers on the map). Ichang is well defended with probably level 4 or 5 forts but with limited supply may be susceptible to attack. West of Changteh Chinese supply has not been interdicted but is likely not very good. The Chinese defenders of Changteh retreated NE across the river and are now marching west through the woods. The victors at Changteh are moving west and southeast; west to attack and southeast to rebuild. A substantial number will remain at Changteh to fix and defend the base in case the 15 Chinese units to their NE decide to change direction and cross the river.

BB Nagato arrived at Nagasaki with 37 system, 3 flotation, and 17 engine damage and will require 56 days in pier side repair. BB Ise arrived at Nagasaki with 23 system, 14 flotation, and 4 engine damage and will require 72 days in shipyard repair, which it will do at Hiroshima.

A dozen+ damaged Tojos at Ambon were successfully evacuated on transports and delivered to Kendari. We have a similar situation at Tavoy with damaged Oscars, so will try it there, too.

A note to anyone planning on playing the DBB-C scenario - the reduction in transport capacity is not the only change - Oscar IIa and later arrival times are 3 to 4 months EARLIER than in scenario 1. The Oscar IIa becomes available in Aug '42, not Nov. Not that it would have changed anything had I had these the past 3 months, but getting the IIb with ARMOR in Feb '43 instead of May might change things. Also, the Frances P1Y1 becomes available in Aug '43, instead of Nov. I haven't found any other changes in aircraft arrival dates.

A dozen (+/-) damaged Oscars were evacuated from Tavoy on a transport. They will unload at Mergui to repair then fly to Bangkok to rejoin the parent unit.

BB Ise arrived at Hiroshima to repair as discussed in a previous post (72 days). As repair shipyard points are in short supply, all 3 damaged BBs were placed on HIGH priority and some DDs were placed on LOW priority.

Vehicle production has again been turned OFF to accumulate HI points. I intend to turn off Val production on Nov 1 for at least 2 weeks as Judys continue to replace Vals on the carriers.

No significant combat action occurred this date. Changteh was not attacked by the Allies, so the facilities repaired somewhat; Koepang was attacked and I see no hope of any repair or entrenchment there.

BB Pennsylvania bombarded Koepang, followed by various bombers, keeping the base thoroughly trashed. Dutch CLs bombarded Ambon as well. I've been told the Allies want Ambon back, but that was before we captured Koepang. So, I don't know which he'll go after first; probably Ambon because I expect his preparation is further along.

The Allies assaulted Normanby Is. and also appear to be garrisoning nearby Woodlark Is. which they already control. These actions make our base at Milne Bay useless, so the troops there will be withdrawn by air.

Hurricanes swept Tavoy and Rahaeng; Warhawks swept Changteh.

Ha-44 engine research advanced to Nov '42 (B5N1 Jill).

The 6th of 6 Jill research sites reached 30(0), so research will now advance 6% per day. Currently at 51% and due in Jan '43, research will advance to Dec '42 in 8+ days, and to Nov '42 in 16+ more days, making the start of B5N1 Jill production in 24+ days (~Nov 22, 1942). I intend to produce 90 per month and change research to the B5N2 Jill at 3 sites.

Nov 1, 1942 (Preview)

Three engines reached the production stage today:

Kawasaki Ha-60 at 40 per month, increasing initially to 60.
Nakajima Ha-44 at 60 per month, increasing initially to 80. Since this engine is only used for the B5N1 Jill, which will only be produced from Dec '42 to ~Aug '43, it will never be increased above 90 per month.
Nakajima Ha-45 at 120 per month, increasing initially to 150.

Vehicle production resumed but may be turned off again in 15 days.

Ki-61-Ia Tony production began with (finally) production of the Kawasaki Ha-60 engine.
Ki-49-II KAI Helen R&D reached 15(0) but will likely not advance from the May '43 production start date.

Just east of that hex the 56 Div and artillery moved east to join 1 Tank Div in front of Rahaeng. The now surrounded 77 LRP and Aussie Bde north of Tavoy were bombed from the air and bombarded by artillery. One or both was seen moving so the fortification is nil.
