I have never once touched any of those buttons. I didn't know either and I couldn't think of any possible advantage to "releasing" any of them.

Looks like you are asking for a veteran pilot for a squadron. Upper right says RESERVE and that is where your experience pilots reside until requested.

Sort the list by skill you need, so that the top is the highest skill, then request however many pilots you want to move into the squadron. It will do it until the squadron is full up...so if you request 10, and you only need 7, it will put 7 in there. Then you can request to fill out beyond a full squadron.

You then need to go to your pilots screen for the squadron, and make them active. Most will show up with a 1 delay, which means they are ready to fight.

Nope. The question is about the buttons on the bottom....GP

If you click on an individual pilot's name you get a message asking if you want to "retire" that pilot. I take that to mean that he is no longer in the game. The buttons at the bottom I think allow you to do the same thing to a single pilot or multiple pilots without going through the two step process. I do agree that there is really no reason to do that except if you just want to clean out some of the names in the list.

I appreciate your reply but I need a solid answer. If it's for removal of pilots, that doesn't make sense....GP

You need to mouse over the buttons and read the Flyouts.

They Retire pilots from service (Remove from the Scenario) the least experienced pilots.
They return back to their hometowns to look for other work.

Or...If the top switch is set to the group pool you can move the least experienced pilots
in the groups to the General Reserve or retire them.

You just need to be careful with the batch move buttons.
Make sure you understand them before you punch them.

The option to remove pilots was added by a patch in 2011.

If you search the forum using General Reserve and retire you will find
several threads that discuss the need players to be able to free up pilot slots
in the late war. The game has a limited number of pilot slots available.

You should mouse over every button in the game and read the Flyout if there is one.

How do you know if you run out of pilot slots? Do the recruits stop coming? Why would you want to release a partially trained pilot to make room for a recruit? Or release a fully trained pilot? Do you get PPs?

I think some of the responders are looking at your posted image as if it were the unit screen. In that case you do indeed need to change the destination for the selected pilots to Unit Reserve, General Reserve or Active.

But in your example you are showing the Reserve (General) pool. To get there, you probably used the "Request Veteran" text in the Bomber unit. That is where selected pilots would go.
If you got to the pool some other way, I don't know where the pilots would go - probably nowhere because the AI wouldn't have a destination for them.

He went into the pool through the Intelligence screen (pilot replacements/ reserve)
He was asking about the buttons at the bottom of that screen.

If you go into the reserve pool screen by using the request veteran button on the
air group screen you get a different set of buttons at the bottom.

If you mouse over the Buttons (In both cases) the Fly out will
tell you what is going to happen if you press the button.

As per the image below:
Flyout: “Release 10 most experienced pilots to this group”
