Replacements and freight questions

Post by fcam1387 »

Hi

After months of playing I still don't think I have mastered the logistics system.

As the Germans (esp during winter 41/42 and 42/43 I am trying to keep my depleted units up to strength by rotating and refitting them at the nearest depot. Is this bad for supply for my units on the frontline as it means that they will not be able to draw freight from the nearest depot?

If it is bad for overall supply, how can one keep their frontline units up to strengh if they need to pull them back 10-20 hexes behind the lines to rear-area depots?

Also, should all refitting units be put at level 4 depots or does lvl 2-3 suffice?

Thanks

I think you have to start from the view that in the first winter your supply system is a mess and you are allocating a far too limited resource.

Clearly how you set things up makes this better or worse but you can't solve the basic problem - essentially there is a trade off between how far east your supply net can work well and how far east you need to be to have a chance at a win.

Having said that, I think that rotating damaged units to depots and then back to the front is the absolute key to minimising any Soviet gains in the winter. They are also hit by the conditions so can only sustain the offensive if the German line starts to weaken badly.

The front line won't reinforce, so in the end you end up with too much badly weakened or you put in place a structured rotation system. Either will lose you ground, the first might lose you the game

Any key depot should be a 4 at this stage, especially if its a refit location

Thanks. That is what I have been more or less trying to do throughout the campaign. But it is now going into 1943 and my logistical network still doesn't seem to be supplying my forces properly. Nearly all the railways have been repaired, but something still seems off. Is it the way I have been setting my supply priority?

I have attached save file and screenshot and would appreciate some insight from veterans of the game!

Thanks

Had a quick look and my feeling is you need more of your front line depots at #3 or #4, set to 0 they aren't contributing.

so as an eg Korenevo is 0, it should be 3 or 4, its refitting, has a HQ next to it and is only about 5 hexes from the front. Dnepropetrovsk is another eg.

As a really rough rule, if its within 6 hexes of the front, put it on pri 4 unless its a really quiet sector.

good to see places like Minsk at pri 4, just release that freight as you need to bring up the front line depots.

Here's my freight table for the same turn (off a MP game). Now it doesn't map as you are a lot better placed- (I was defending Kharkov and Stalino)

but the key bit is I was allocating about 50% more to the front line formations
