How to conduct ASW operations?

Post by Kriegsspieler »

I must confess that I am completely baffled about how to conduct a decent ASW campaign. The moment you bring a DD or coastal defense group within 2 hexes of a sub, it fires off an interdiction attack, which sometimes results in the DD being damaged. Then -- nothing. The DD cannot return fire, although perhaps that is already accounted for in the initial "interdiction" combat. If that's the case, however, I have yet to see a single instance where the DD managed to get a hit on the sub. I'll admit that I have not been playing all that long, so maybe this is just the result of bad luck.

So either something is not working right here, or I don't know what I am doing. Any suggestions?

upload the latest patch, there was a bug that always gave subs surprise. it depends on what subs are doing if you trying to get subs in fleet mode away from a landing area or something then yes you do just have to move next to them if you still have mps left you can fire back. if they are in raider mode and are attacking convoys you just have to have destroyers and or cvs at sea within I think its 24 hexes then they add to your escort effectiveness, see screen shot. Hope that helps, have fun

Thanks - this helps. I do have the latest patch, but it seemed the subs always got the first shot in anyway, even when fully spotted.
But I'll try to work things as you suggest.

FYI the surprise only adds a little bonus and doesn't impact air strikes on them or convoy battles.

Thanks, Alvaro. Sometime over the longer term I think the game could benefit from making the convoy/sub raiding part of the game a little more transparent in how it works. That being said, the structure of supplies and convoys is excellent, really as good as I have seen it in any game since War in the Pacific (And no one would want to reproduce all THAT detail!)

This patch is still expected because subs always have surprise.
