Is there any way to load a save game file into the editor?

Post by thedoctorking »

I am playing an ongoing solo CG, and I have just discovered that I started the game with an older version that contains an annoying bug (USSR Motorized brigades are not multi-role, something that makes my Tank Corps much less interesting). It occurred to me that I could create a new .scn file with my current position, but with the newer scenario files where the TOE was correct, or alternatively edit my save game file using the editor to fix the TOE error. It's not apparent to me how to do this? Anybody have any pointers?

That is not possible. Maybe PM Joel if he or Pavel can do something for you.

Thanks, but I'm sure they have better things to do than deal with what is really a minor problem. Maybe time to start the game over and learn some new stuff anyway.

can't you just rename the save as a .scn file, that should become the basis of something you can work on in the editor. But you still may not be able to access the particular changes you want to make?

I think after the save game is renamed as a .scn file and a new game is start with this new scenario, the program will automatically update all the generic data (including ToE(OB)) to the latest version and could have solved the problem of the original post.

Some reminders when changing a save file to a scenario file -
(a) If you use the Editor to open this "renamed scenario", first thing is to make a change to the scenario name in the Editor. Otherwise any save will overwrite the original scenario file, instead of the newly renamed .scn file.
(b) if the original game was started with a older version, some ToE(OB) may be deleted in later updates and this may cause problem. For example the Sov 42a Guards Tank Corps ToE(OB) was deleted in 1.02.01 update (reported in changelog of 1.02.06), units happen to be with this ToE(OB) will have problem and may need manual fix. Better check the changelogs of WitE2's updates.

If there is a multiplayer game and game was started with a bug in OB then, afaik, game is broken and patches can not fix it.
It would be nice to have a way to fix it. As its a pity to play for N real months only to figure out that you can not create for example guard corps and patches can not fix it.

I do not play multiplayer game and am unfamiliar with it. Can you download the multiplayer save game to your computer? If so, may be you can do the same as solo (i.e. change .sav to .scn, use Editor to check if everything is fine, then use this new .scn to continue your game) if both players don't mind the potential risks associated with using the Editor.

you may be able to get around this but would need Matrix to get you the save then use it for a .scn to generate what would become a new game.

Pelton got caught out manipulating the server saves in WiTE1 (he was doing something to remove Soviet combat sapper formations - these were more common in #1 and fairly essential to Soviet play) so I think the whole process was tightened up in response. One of the many instances where having to deal with outright abuse makes the wider system less user friendly for the vast majority of players,

i understand that, and i am always against a cheating.
just trying to say that it would be nice if only devs would be able to fix multiplayer games when OB is bugged.

This worked.

This was a solo game, that is, a .sav file. I renamed it .scn, and when I opened it in the editor, it immediately updated the TOE to the current version. I had to open it first and set the game options to have both sides human or else it tried to run the AI turn when opened in the editor.

In response to concerns about cheating, the editor will not open a .psv file that has been renamed to .scn. It says it is "not a valid scenario file". So somebody already thought of this. And you can't even get a file off the multiplayer server without the assistance of the Matrix Gods.

A drawback to this is that it resets the events file to turn 1. So the Finns enter the war on the next turn, western allied events are reset to 1941, etc.

Clicking "process turns" while editing the .scn file seems to address this problem.

you can set events to already fired in the editor - this is done for all the post-June 41 scenario/campaign starts. Lot easier
