Ackdarian Storyline Events Question

I'm curious about what I think is part of the Ackdarian storyline / event chain, hoping someone can provide some insight.

I've started quite a few New Games as the Ackdarians, just wanted to see what sort of variables showed up for them. Kind of neat having that spaceport from the very beginning, although oddly sometimes I was given the option to activate it on Day 1, while in other games I had to 'discover' it first before activating it.

But what I'm curious about is that hidden 'dormant' pirate base in the home system. After a few brushes with it it in very early games, I just avoided it, and since it didn't actually do anything, that didn't seem to be a problem. Then, once my fleet(s) got to be a certain size / strength, even on Manual Control, they would automatically begin to prepare for an attack on this dormant pirate base.

So in my current game, once the fleets wanted to attack the base, I said "let's see what happens" and let them, especially since it seemed like they would do so anyway, even if I tried to stop them. So I destroyed the base fairly easily, and interestingly got a message during the aftermath about having 'picked up an enemy commander from a rescue pod' or something like that. And I believe I also got information about another pirate system, way out deeper in the (very large) galaxy.

And that's it. Nothing else seems to have happened. There appears to be a small warship (an escort, I think) from an unknown faction parked in the asteroid field where the base was, but it doesn't do anything, and doesn't register as an enemy. The distant pirate system (which I was later able to explore) actually seems to contain two different pirate factions, as well as a nest of space monsters. I can communicate with one of the pirate factions, but not the other.

So I'm confused about this whole series of events. Is there something glitched? Is there something I need to do to advance the story line? Is there something missing?

My empire currently has about 40+ colonies in it, I'm up to cruisers for warships, have found the Ackdarian home system with its truly impressive horde of monsters around the star, but that business with the dormant pirate base in my original start system just seems a bit pointless. If anyone can offer insight into what's going on, if there's something I need to do / not do, if there might be a glitch somewhere, I'd appreciate it.
