Canada -> UK convoys and deploying subs against it

Post by lucr41 »

I have some questions regarding the Canada -> UK convoys and deploying subs against it.

More specifically, I am wondering what is more efficient: having a sub raid the convoy lane, or placing it in the "Merchant Shipping Disruption" zone in the Gulf of the St. Lawrence?

The impact of a sub raiding the convoy lane is easy to quantify, as it appears in the Military Activity Summary. When the sub is in the MSD zone, the only visible impact is seeing explosions in Québec. I would think that has the effect of reducing Canada's total MPP value and thus, the convoy's value sent to the UK before it even hits the waves. Is this assumption right? Is it worth doing this?

As far as I can see, having 3 subs successfully raid the Canada -> UK convoy lane will totally eliminate the value of this convoy.

So, is it a waste of sub ressources to have 3 subs raid the convoy lane and a 4th in the Gulf of St. Lawrence MSD? Is it worth placing 3 subs in the MSD (there appears to be room for 3)?

As always, thanks a ton for this great game and the outstanding support of the developpers!

Because the sub raiding the marked hexes doesn't use up supply in doing so, it's not necessarily a waste having one there, but it might not be the best use of it.

I'd add that having 3 subs raiding the convoy probably is not as economical as having just 2 do so, because there will likely be diminished returns from the third raider, and given that there's a limit to how many MPPs they can sink before their supply falls and they need to return to port, it might be better to just have 2 on this route and use the third elsewhere.

Raiding in multiple places might also make the British spread their ASW efforts. Or you could do what I do sometimes do and that is to have a sub in non-raiding mode placed so that the British might have a nasty surprise when they sail into it - hoping of course that it isn't a destroyer that does so of course!
