Syria worth it for the Allies?

Post by OxfordGuy3 »

Is it ever worth attacking a Vichy Syria as the allies, as was historical? It gives 20 MPP, means you can defend the ports from Axis invasion with Garrisons and/or naval units (though means you then have to spend MPPs to buy the Garrisons...) and makes sending a second unit (which you need) to Iraq easier (and potentially saves on Transport costs).

On the flip side, Britain usually has enough on it's plate to deal with around that time to get involved with another "front" and I'm unsure of the diplomatic consequences - I assume it increases Axis leaning for Vichy France, Algeria and Tunisia and probably reduces USA mobilization (if done before they enter the war)?

Absolutely. There is no way for the Allies to hold Egypt against a determined attack so you will need to operate to Iraq. Make sure you keep a unit in Mosul so the partisan's don't reduce supply.

Ah yes, I forgot about the rail link... What's the minimum force you need to take out Syria?

Three tac bombers that were just attached to an HQ should take it out then send in the recon, make sure you have the Strat in reserve sometimes it doesn't work. You can wait until you get the army to hit it first to make sure. Its important to take it in one turn because the ports will open up. Reduce ports if you don't take it in one turn.

Is Britain really going to have 3 TAC bombers to spare in 1940 for such an operation, though?

Well you start with one and get two more. Usually Egypt is a hot point and its all hands on deck. So yup you have three tacs in Egypt.

Would those TAC bombers need to be upgraded to at least level 1 Ground Attack for this strategy to have a chance of success?
