Guessing he didn't send very many British units to France. No idea how USSR has lost so much territory by July...

France is too hard only if the UK sends 10-12 corps and the Allies field 4 armored corps together. But a lot of Allied players will refrain from it just to have a good game and be fair-play...

Or will use house rules.

But some will not... hence the problem...

He did mention a March attack. Assuming good weather with some luck, that is ~4 months...

I have lost Moscow once again myself. Leningrad is at risk. I don’t have enough PP to upgrade my units from 1939 level to 1942 level. I have the technology, I don’t have the PP. I have 8 armies forming in the deployment queue never coming.

Conclusion, Russia is never big enough in fact. We need PP, PP and PP against a strong player.
And yes, I have max PP coming from UK only in 1941.

French defense was light, Soviet defense was non-existent until 10 hexes in.

I've played a few games by now, so that experience helps too.

The Soviets are very hard to play. Against an equal player it is rough. Against a better player, good luck.

Yeah, this is my last game. I can't win so why bother to continue.

We are playing our second PBEM game of War Plan and it is August 1943. As in the first game the Axis have taken Moscow, Stalingrad and the Caucasus oilfields. Looks like Sevastopol is going to fall shortly and possibly Leningrad. I am the Allies and in both games I invaded France in 1943 to take some pressure off the Russians. Neither of the two games had the changes to rail advancement, overruns or winterization of the Siberian reinforcements as we decided not to start over.
We intend to play again, this time the 1939 small fleet scenario and hopefully the balancing changes will make a difference as we both think War Plan is a great game.
One of the tactics my friend has used for the Germans is breaking down corps to divisions so he has a solid line in Russia. Even though they are divisions it seems difficult to destroy them. Maybe Russian experience should increase faster from year to year. As in the first game I had to disband the entire Russian airforce to gain PPs. I hope that will be not necessary in the upcoming game because it so unhistorical.
I also think that the Pripet Marshes are way too easy for the Axis to move through. Even when you enter a road hex from a non road hex it only cost one OP. Historically the Pripet Marshes divided the eastern front. It would certainly help the Russians in this game.
A strategy my friend employed was using Axis minor country units to garrison conquered countries and Italy so they weren't weak links on the Russian front. They were in Norway, North Africa, Italy, France and Vichy. Maybe there should be limitations as to where minor country units can be placed. As far as I know there weren't any Hungarian and Romanian units in North Africa, Italy or Norway.
Finland has been a significant factor in both games drawing off Russian units and cutting off the rail from Murmansk so no lend lease could get through in the winter months. The Finns are tough as they are winterized and the terrain north of Leningrad helps them. Historically, the Finns were hesitant about advancing too deep in to Russia so maybe some sort of restriction should be added as it would help the Russians who always seem to be short units.
I intend on converting a lot of the Russian corps to garrison status in the upcoming to see if that helps. I hope the small fleet rule doesn't hurt the Allies as that was one of their strengths in the standard scenario. I suspect it will be more difficult to screen CVs from Axis subs in the small fleet scenario.

I have defended myself well with the Russians against Sveint. He did not conquer Leningrad, nor Moscow, nor Stalingrad, and we are already in 1943 with the Russians timidly counterattacking.

It was a peculiar game, as he surprised me by landing in the Middle East and conquering Egypt, Iraq, Iran, and Baku. Turkey joined the axis. I understand that these conquests benefited the Axis, although perhaps it harmed them by having to divide their armies to attack from the east and the Caucasus.

I just don’t have the formula. My Assault 1939 infantry corps are taking forever to convert to half armies. Whatever format, at 30%-32% experience, there are just slowing panzer corps. Aviation is not doing much. Going to garrison mode is just an invitation to encirclement. All my armies are coming at Assault 1939 and I don’t have enough PP to upgrade them while repairing the units already on the map while trying to buy new armies.

« Against an equal player it is rough ». This must be the case for the German player not for the Russian player. Russia is lacking production. And when you are losing Moscow, this is 25 PP lost.

Game over

I have a hard time with the Soviets vs a expert player but guess I have an issue with them all vs experts, I think spending $ to upgrade the junk corps is a mistake I think you should not let them upgrade, only upgrade once they convert to armies, and even then prioritize upgrading new better corps and arm/mech, keep your reinforcement level down in the summer and fall so you can start at least 1 sometimes 2 new inf armies per turn most of what you start with isn't worth reinforcing anyways , until winter then counter attack even if odds aren't good to gain experience, max out reinforcements at this time to replace these losses. UK must send max pp Russia so boa needs to go good for UK

I don’t upgrade corps nor repairing them until they are half armies. This is for the corps at 30% experience. For the corps at 20% experience, I disband them whenever possible to keep a frontline.

I am buying around 10 new armies in 1941, at Assault 1939 to have quantity, but this is not enough. My BOA is good but with the lack of Russian production, when you buy an army, you are not buying or repairing much except this army.

With the aviation completely destroyed at 9/20 strength, they won’t flight anymore. And here are coming the paratroopers to do some crazy encirclement. Pripet marches that are an highway. Mechanized corps at 20%-25% experience, never know if I keep them or disbanding them.

The corps level scenario of governato for Toaw4 is hard for Russia but not that hard. But this must be me not understanding something.

We will be giving it another go, this time the 1939 small fleet. This will be our first game with the changes to overruns, the advancement of rail and the winterization of the Siberian units. I just lost my second game as the Allies and Russia got their butt kicked again. The Axis took Moscow, Stalingrad, Sevastopol and the Caucasus oil fields and it is only September 1943.
I mentioned in my previous post that the Pripet Marshes are way too easy to move through. German panzer corps were advancing on either side, not through the marshes. Maybe the roads should be removed. If the marshes were treated more realistically it would split the front in two shortening the front line for the Russians.
I was thinking of converting all my French units to garrison mode. Anyone else do this?
This is our first small fleet game and I'm thinking that subs are more valuable and deadly as a fleet of 3. If yes maybe the Germans put less on raiding?
Last game I built shipyards and MM's early because of their lead time.
In both games I had to disband the entire Russian airforce to get PP's. Not exactly historical.
I'm hoping this one is a little more competitive.
