A lot of us have this problem, to the point where every game on 4.4.1 gets corrupted and unplayable.

See:

I hope it will be Steve no.1 priority to fix that when he comes back from Europe.

Getting this too in my solitaire game. I go back to an earlier automated save so I can redo a bit, but after I save, I cannot open the saved file... mar/April 41 and it was a great game... sigh.

My advice is to revert back to 3.2.0. The only glitch is with trade agreements because version 4.X added an extra field that's not in 3.2.0. However; with a bit of editing magic this is fairly easy to correct in your gamefile.

Also, I've found that supply calculation times really slowdown in certain situation significantly in 4.x vs 3.2.0. The opinion for me and our group is that if you want to take a game through to the end then 3.2.0 is the only version that's workable with the caveat that mode of play is solitary. Solitary is our mode of play but not style, which is solitary mode couple with a messaging app for multi-player play.

FYI. I have installed and patched up to 4.4.1 (debug). However; I've found that running multiple versions is not a problem. All I need is the executable from the retrograde version(s) you also wish to run in your "World in Flames" program file directory.

My procedure for "installing" and running a retrograde version(s) is:

(1) I get and rename the MWIF.exe executable of the retrograde version I wish to "install" and run. For example, I got the MWIF.exe for version 3.2.0 (debug) and renamed that version to 3.2.0-MWIF.exe and then dropped that version into my MWIF program directory: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Matrix Games\World in Flames"

(2) I then create a shortcut to that retro-grade executable on my desktop.

(3) To run it, I right-click on the shortcut and select "Run as administrator".

(4) I just recently upgraded my PC which came with Windows 11 vs my old PC which was running Windows 10. I've found that if I don't run as administrator that the game files saved by MWIF are inaccessible to me even if I browser to where MWIF stores those files. It took me a day or so of a lot of frustration to figure that one out and only with the help, suggestion, of my son to run MWIF as administrator.

Can one run a 4.xxx game with 3.xxx MWiF executable? I would like to save my current game. Perhaps if I can get past whatever problem is occurring using 3.xxx I can revert back to 4.xxx once more.

yes. I do it all the time. You have to edit the game file to change the version to 3.2.0. And there's an extra field in your trade agreements that may cause you to have to edit them too.

Thank-you.

I have been able to run the game on 3.02 using the procedure above. I have tried opening the file in 4.02 after doing a few phases; however, the file will still not open using the newest version.

Nevertheless, I am glad I can now continue the game. Hopefully, they can fix the newest version.

This is getting very frustrating...

Yet another 4.4.1 game has stopped working for our game. I have managed to get it going again in 3.02 but the fixes offered in 4.4.1 are so much better in many respects, it is not as fun to revert. I will end up doing a lot more modding of the .GAM files.

Just to see if we can track this down...

- our recent game ended either shortly before or after a turn end/start. To revert, we try to find a save game that we can start in 4.4.1 and then transition it to 3.02. This appears to be around the conquest phase/ after Vichy for sure (do not recall the exact step. Any game save later will not open in 4.4.1.

In our game, Vichy was declared at that turn end... do not know if this was relevant or not to the freeze up.

I anyone has more about the circumstances of the save game bug they experienced, it would be nice to know.

One other thing, every 4.4.1 game I have played has suffered from this... it makes me wonder if anyone has actually played deep into the game with this version with any success.

Yesterday we were left hanging after the wheather dice roll of January/February 1944 firts impulse in a net play game. We started the game with another version almost a year ago or may be more.
