Is the AI depot deployment system effective?

Post by tiger111 »

Does the AI do a decent job of building depots if you run the AI at the end of the player turn.?

Some post suggest that it doesn`t do a good job.

What`s your view and do you use it ( and under what circumstances) ?

Thank you

actually yes, its worth studying the layout and choices it makes as they are based on an understanding of how the logistics system actually works (which is an important caveat).

I learnt a lot doing this and significantly changed my practice as a result.

But I prefer manual control as I have ideas that it doesn't incorporate and generally logistics is too closely tied to what I will do, not just what I am currently doing, and no AI routine will capture that distinction

Loki - i think i am at the point where i can run manually now anyways.... AI Air assist is a different matter... i tend to run AI air to create Air Directives then filter and adjust on that... not sure if i should just be purely manual after T2 onwards... at least with GS and a lil Recon...

This is almost my exact same experience.

Don't believe the AI comes close to managing depot deployment as good as a human with basic game knowledge.

On that point, why would it ever be advantageous to delete a depo that's already built (unless you think it will be overrun).

If it's not used, i thought the trucks get moved to other depo's where there is demand.

That is how I interpret it as well.

I mean, you have already spent the AP on the depot to begin with.

Seems like you should be able to just set it to '0' if you don't want to use it anymore.

I do not understand why the AI doesn't just do that instead of deleting it.

there is a small gain but its very situational.

if you set to 0, the trucks start to migrate to new locations but it can take a few turns, if its deleted they are immediately released. Now whether that makes any difference is very unlikely (on the assumption such a depot is no longer doing anything) so I personally never delete, in fact as the axis I pre-build so the railyards etc are all ready for when I start to retreat in 1943 (but then I am somewhat of a pessimist)

I'm not saying the assist is perfect, or that a player who has some grasp won't do better, but it avoids the pitfalls I see a lot of inexperienced players making (and then often claiming the whole system is broken) and its informative to look at what it does and unpick the bits that work and that you can adapt into your own approach

My (very limited) experience has been that the AI has no clue how to handle retreats (no, I'm not holding large patches of clear ground for the wermarcht to just smack my divisions around):

So now I don't use it at all.

As Soviet I run it once. At the start of the game. As soon as I get a turn.

It will create new depots eventually. And if it creates 20 new dopots I have spared APs.

Then as Stamb said, never again.
