Subs glitching / jumping around again

Post by mastertronical »

This issue has cropped back up again, any ideas? Have tried rebooting system / games and it keep repeating.

In a nutshell, all the subs act screwy mine + opfor (hence all radar contacts as the jump to the surface and back).

Hopefully the video works

I have run it multiple times in editor mode without god's eye, with god's eye, and in the straight game. All the subs seem to stay at comms depth very consistently. If I tell them to go deeper, they drop out of comms and I lose contact. The only "jumping" around I see is one IDed enemy sub that changes detected depth if I turn god's eye on or off. I eventually just focused on the Suffren and saw no weirdness.

What version are you using?

btw, the video only helps a little without any audio guiding what to look at. It jumps all around. It might be helpful to just focus on one sub and narrate what's happening. What I see in the video from what I can see is the subs drop in depth and then come back up. Part of the issue might be that realistic sub comms seems to be on and the subs lose comms and then try to come to comms depth. But its not repeating it when I run it. The subs stay at comms depth. But if that were the case, a sub comms message would be visible as it cycles up and down.

Playing around with it more I'd make two suggestions:

1) Go into editor and turn off realistic sub comms. I think this is making it look like the sub is jumping around if its cycling up and down in depth.
2) Re-path or delete the sub and add it back in. What I'm seeing is some weird stuff with the Ambush with pathing. Its always a dotted line and that means its having a hard time with the path. I don't know why, but it might isolate the issue.

So what I found playing around with it. First thing is go into editor, turn off realistic sub comms, turn on god's eye view. You'll see that Suffren and the enemy subs are holding fairly consistent in depth. There's no jumping around in location. But the ambush periodically comes to 0 ft and then back to depth.

If you look at the pic, any sub in that trench area 100-150nm around the Ambush will have that same cycling. I have inserted brand new subs and moved the Suffren into that space and they all start the depth cycling. If I move the Ambush up near the Suffren, it stops the cycling. I also noted that any sub in that area tends to have a hard time pathfinding. A lot of dotted line lines. That makes me suspect the issue is map-related focusing on bathyspheric issues in the map data.

The jumping around is the subs that are cycling are going in and out of comms, which makes it appear they are moving around location.

So what exactly should we be looking at???

Going through both these videos, I see:

1) Submarine _contacts_ (NOT the ground-truth subs themselves) changing position. If you know how passive contact processing & updating works then you know that contacts can indeed "jump" around. This is not a bug, this is how stuff works.

2) Own-side subs going "off-grid" and then re-appearing elsewhere once they are able to report back. Again this is not a bug, this is how things are expected to work.

Can you run in this in God's Eye view (so that you/we can actually see the ground-truth of things) and observe a submarine actually abruptly changing location? Only that would constitute a legit possible bug.

Oh, and: "all the subs act screwy" is not really helpful.

As I keep saying: We are not sitting beside you on your machine. You have to describe things in detail. You have to tell us what you see, and (separately) what you _think_ is going on.

The dev team has enough on its plate without hurrying off to wild goose chases.

Hi, thanks for looking into this. You'll have to accept my apologies as I’m just a casual gamer and only trying to help out - however have taken a 3 more screen captures in 'god mode' (link at bottom) and will try to describe what i think is happening:
  • Basically most of the underwater object (nato, opfor and biologicals) are cycling though depths and sometimes they 'jump' i.e. switch position.

When i tried to give a command to a sub ('Ambush'), to either change course or depth it ignores the command
It seems to happen when a save file is loaded back up i.e., if you start a scenario and play through non-stop for 5 hours or so everything is fine, however when you reload / start a new session there is a chance of the issue occurring

Have experienced this in the past when playing other scenarios, and even when playing the earlier version (CMANO) - now that I’ve figured out how to do a screen capture I will try to capture more examples.

Apologies for quality of screen captures, for some reason it downgrades the resolution when uploading - if there is a better way of getting the mp4 files to you let me know

I have the same issues, it isn't just you. They only seem to crop up when loading a save file, and only on scenarios that have been around for awhile - Mediterrean Fury scenarios, etc.

The subs - enemy and my own - literally teleport to different physical locations (usually within 50nm or so) on the map every five seconds or so and will stay surfaced. If I tell them to dive, they will start diving but then magically pop up back on the surface again (i.e, 0 feet depth) instantaneously, regardless of the starting depth.

I'll try and take a video next time it happens.

Not easy to debug...

Cheers for the updates guys, gonna get back into it over the weekend and see if I can recreate again. Good to know it's not just me.
