Why does the game say that the subs need a -1 or less to be successful? Minus one?
I thought I knew how to play this game....

The -1 is the shore bombardment modifier, I am sure. The SUB is in the 2-box, in fine weather.

That's because you didn't include the SUB's for the interception (the box is unchecked).

Italians roll 2 and intercepts TRS.

TRS gets scared and seeks protections from 0 box and stays in the sea area.

Right. Checking the box tells 4 is enough to intercept. Never noticed that before.

Same fighter can fly to Coral Sea also, which is the next combat and Allies will initiate there.

The Salomons both rolled - no combat.

Coral Sea Allies 2, Axis 5 - naval air combat.
Allies used points to get +5/-5 odds to air combat

I was so sure Japanese plane is going to be shot down and did not ask which one is cleared, I can redo that if needed.
