Today's main news is the landing of the Japanese at Kendari. As I expected, the air force failed in the counterattacks. But the air defense is not strong, there are definitely no more aircraft carriers than two, in addition, they carry Claude aircraft. I will try attack to invasion with several TFs. The retreat route is to the south, as more aircraft carriers are reported at Balikpapan. The attack is risky, but there is a chance that I will inflict some losses on the enemy. If my ships will be sunk or damaged, this is probably the last action of the surface forces in DEI.

Today's events are rather positive after yesterday. I divided the ships damaged at Kendari into two TFs and sent them in different directions. CL Glasgow and DD Van Nes were left behind as scapegoats. Both were sunk, but allowed the others to escape. Now only the 8AKL, which carries supplies from Balikpapan to Australia, is within range of aircraft carriers. The opponent knows about them, but their loss would not be so terrible.

It is uncertain what the enemy aircraft carriers will do, as another invasion fleet is likely approaching from Borneo. AK Ryoyo Maru has already taken care of KVII, which first damaged it and probably sank during the second attack. The TFs are heading southwest to Batavia and there are a total of 4 bases where the enemy can land. I did my best to respond to all possibilities. There are no more accurate data on the composition of TFs.

Image

In addition to these skirmishes, I also sent an air force over Palembang into action. Again, it could have been better, but we're not good enough for Zero yet. AVG also got into the action over Sian and the overall result is encouraging. Of course, I'm trying to disappear because the enemy will want to settle accounts.

Japanese ships arrive at Merak, but troops have not yet disembarked. The opponent is incredibly lucky, as I have 3 CVs and 1 CVL ready here, but although the prediction was clear, not a single attack was launched and the moment of surprise is lost. We'll see how the opponent behaves. He can leave and wait for the support of aircraft carriers, or his target may be elsewhere. I am disappointed. Otherwise, nothing happens again except the attacks on Palembang and Pearl Harbor.

Very surprised to see that your air losses to date and his are nearly the same (3 difference). That is a great result for the Allies at this stage in the war. If he is being careless about how he uses his aircraft he will suffer shortages in skilled pilots within a year. :)

Summary January 1942

We have two war months behind us, so let's take a look.

Burma / India
During January, Japanese troops advanced on Burma and my defensive line in Pegu immediately collapsed. We decided with the main forces to retreat to Rangoon. I gained about a week here. Most importantly, the retreat has damaged most of the industry and the Japanese will have to repair it. Some troops try to move to Akyab, while the remaining troops defend Swebo. I'm moving reinforcements from India, but it will be more of a delaying fight. The Japanese 14th Tank Regiment conquered Mandalay and is now attacking Lashio. The enemy air force operates only from remote bases and destroys mainly units retreating to Akyab.

Image

Malaya
In Malaysia, hostilities were limited to defending Singapore. So far, I've been defending myself for a month, but I know the end is near. Assault value dropped below 400. On the other hand, I did not expect such a long defense, because the Japanese used Mersing gambit and this significantly reduces the chances of defenders. The air force does not operate here at all, so whenever the fortress is lowered, I can quickly raise it again to 3.

DEI
Virtually nothing happened here until the middle of the month. The Japanese tried to attack my PT boats at Balikpapan, but several ships ended up in a minefield. In the second half of the month came the landings at Manado and Kendari. Despite the failure at the Battle of Kendari, I finally managed to save almost the entire Force Z.

Palembang is bombed regularly. British and Dutch fighters once tried to intervene. About 50 planes were shot down, but after a few days the raids continued. At the end of the month, the invasion fleet approached Merak and we will see how it develops. I tried to surprise her with aircraft carriers, but the weather did not allow air operations and the surprise is lost. Interestingly, apart from Singkawang and Davao, there is no enemy air unit anywhere, and the Base Force was not present during the landings. Interestingly.

Image

Philippines

The only change from December is that the Japanese landed the 9th Division in Aparri, which is approaching Manila. Manila has been declared an open city and I defend only at Clark Field and Bataan. My power on CF is about 1800 AV.

Image

Australia/SWPac
Probably January's greatest achievement was averting the Japanese invasion of Port Moresby, which hit both ships and ground forces hard.No other Japanese plans are known. The enemy shortens his time by occupying empty points in the Solomon Islands, Santa Cruz and New Hebrides.

Image

Pacific
The situation has not changed much here either. The enemy occupied the entire Hawaiian Islands except Pearl Harbor. Then Johston Island and Palmyra Island. Attacks are limited to shelling PH from the sea and airstrikes from the air.

Image

China

These are not big maneuvers in China either. After initial moves and knocks near Changsha, the Japanese withdrew completely and apparently moving troops elsewhere. The main direction of the attack is at Sian, where troops from two directions are heading. I don't know the exact strength of the units yet, as some are still moving. I hope my defense lasts, I will not voluntarily withdraw from Sian. Overall, the queue is rather static. Air strikes are very sporadic and I try to be annoying with AVG as long as I have it.The main defensive lines are indicated.

Image

Overall, I am satisfied, as there has been no dramatic turnaround. I was expecting a much more aggressive month, and apart from Burma, the enemy made virtually no progress unless I counted the occupation of insignificant bases. A total of 50 ships were sunk, which is not much, considering that I lost 221 ships. As for the planes, the enemy has already suffered more losses than I have. Most of all, I hope his pilots are dying.

Feb 1, 1942

The Japanese land in Oosthaven, which was the most likely option for me. My aircraft carriers changed position a little further north, but to be within range. The plans were again thwarted by the weather, but in the end at least one attack came. I don't think CV Shoho will get to the port anymore. The overall result is poor.
Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Oosthaven at 48,96

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

Raid detected at 30 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 11 minutes

CA Furutaka
AK Sasako Maru
xAP Koan Maru
AK Sakura Maru
TB Tomozuru, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage
TB Kiji
CA Chokai
Part of the Japanese ships stayed at Merak, which confuses me. Unfortunately, I do not know exactly where the enemy's aircraft carriers are. One of the TFs is chasing my transport ships and today he sank two more AKLs. There are several hexes north of Exmounth. I think the second TF is sailing to the landing site, but I will stay one day. The prey is too tempting.

I lost my first submarine today.
Sub vs Sub: SS I-172 attacking SS Plunger at 180,108 - near Pearl Harbor

Japanese Ships
SS I-172

Allied Ships
SS Plunger, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
On the ground, the Japanese attack Singapore again. In my opinion, they leave the units with little rest, otherwise Singapore would be lost. In any case, these attacks permanently exhaust me and nothing is eternal. The AV has dropped to 313, but I'm glad that the units in Singapore may not be able to be used immediately for further attacks.
Ground combat at Singapore (50,84)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 42401 troops, 584 guns, 398 vehicles, Assault Value = 1065

Defending force 40264 troops, 555 guns, 400 vehicles, Assault Value = 403

Japanese adjusted assault: 965

Allied adjusted defense: 1087

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 3)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
3107 casualties reported
Squads: 10 destroyed, 252 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 51 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 10 disabled
Guns lost 25 (3 destroyed, 22 disabled)
Vehicles lost 35 (5 destroyed, 30 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
944 casualties reported
Squads: 23 destroyed, 62 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 28 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 22 disabled
Guns lost 17 (1 destroyed, 16 disabled)
Vehicles lost 11 (1 destroyed, 10 disabled)
The enemy is also successful in Burma and retreating troops are trapped. All that remains is the air evacuation of part of the units and their replenishment in India. There is no chance to save Burma, but I will try to stretch the time.

Intelligence reports the 10th Division on its move to Truk. It is already the third large division from Manchuria.
Intelligence reports 24th Inf Rgt sailing to Christmas Island. I probably can't stop it.

Your Czech colloquialisms make me smile whenever I see them...

"The enemy shortens his time by occupying..." :D Just FYI, this does not make much sense to a native English speaker...

That's unfortunate. I don't know what a native Englishman thinks
But I can try: Because the enemy has nothing to do and is bored, he repaints "points" and bases...

I will try to write it more clearly, but a report in Czech would be ideal.

Today, the situation calms down again. After a previous attack by my aircraft carriers, the Japanese retreated out of range. Japanese aircraft carriers are already heading for Java, so it's time to clear the area. The opponent conquers Oosthaven and heads north.

Japanese ships land at Oosthaven. So it's some second wave of units. I think the Japanese want to build an air base here, which will make it practically impossible for me to operate the air force in the whole area. Of course, I'm trying to attack the enemy from the air, but there are no hits. But I must admit that the Dutch and the British are brave men. I am gradually withdrawing British and Australian planes to Surabaya, Timor and Australia. I will use them when appropriate. The Dutch have to fight to the bitter end.

There's not much to write about, which is actually good news for me. The attacks on Clark Field have stopped so far, it is probably planned to replenish the aircraft. Likewise, there are no attacks on PH. Here, too, according to the report, more than ten planes were damaged every day, and that can't be sustained all the time.

Today, the 1st AVG Squadron welcomed enemy bombers over Myitkyina. I wonder where most of the Japanese Air Force is. Unless almost everything has been converted to training.

Today, the enemy attempted another attack on Singapore. Since the original plan to quickly occupy the base did not work, he had to bring in reinforcements. There are a complete four divisions and several infantry and tank regiments. According to the result, they will probably not be in perfect condition. Unfortunately, my strength is exhausted after two months.

After a long time, submarines were successful against merchant ships today. The USS S-38 attacked and sank AK Kiyozumi Maru with a cannon and torpedoes near Luzon. The Dutch KXI torpedoed a large transport ship near Singkawang and apparently damaged it. KXII sank in the Java Sea. None of the crew survived and the cause is unknown.
Sub attack near Calayan at 83,70

Japanese Ships
xAK Kiyozumi Maru, Shell hits 4, Torpedo hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage

Japanese Ships
xAP Suwa Maru, Torpedo hits 1
AMC Bankok Maru
xAP Palau Maru
xAK Syoan Maru
xAK Alaska Maru
DD Nokaze

Allied Ships
SS KXI
Overall, combat activity is small. The Japanese are still shelling Pearl Harbor, but I think Japanese replenishment of ammunition is more challenging than my replenishment. In the mountains between Hilo and Kona, the island's last defenders were destroyed. With the exception of Pearl Harbor, there are no longer any Allied forces in Hawaii.

Allied ground losses:
5 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
BC Repulse docked at the safe harbor. It is in surprisingly good condition after being hit by a torpedo and 16 bombs.
Aviation activity is minimal and 1: 3 losses correspond to this.

The Japanese seem to have run out of aviation fuel. There was probably not a single plane in the air. Today's losses are 0:1
The only action is an attack on Singapore. The Japanese apparently want to destroy their troops completely. The basic assault value of the 5th Division is 7! :o
