Cant wait to play
Just wanted to say hello, all. I finally got this game in the mail today, and I cant wait to get home after work and try it out.
RE: Cant wait to play
Let us know how it goes. You may even have a question or two that the TOS community will be glad to answer.
RE: Cant wait to play
Well, I do have one question right off the bat. I noticed that there is a 1.1 patch available, and I will be downloading that as soon as I manage to get the game installed. But I have read people discussing a v1.4 on these boards. What's the deal with that?
RE: Cant wait to play
Welcome. You may want to have a look at the sticky threads at the top of the main part of the WS forum, especially the one on the turn system, which everyone has a little trouble with at first. Stick with it through a few battles, and it'll seem intuitive!
RE: Cant wait to play
v1.4 is the shareware version of the game, before it went commercial. The most recent patch for Warring Suns (commercial version of Titans of Steel) is patch v1.1.0.

Sweet. Thanks to all of you for your help. I think I'm going to enjoy hanging out on these boards. It seems to have a very friendly atmosphere. I wish I could say that for all the games I play **cough** SWG**cough**
I've been playing TBS games for a long time, including (can I say it here?) BT, both table top and PC versions, so I dont think the concepts will be too difficult. I'm sure it'll take a bit of getting used to the controls, and the way weapons work. I hear this game has a steep learning curve, but I'm confident that my years of experience will help make that a bit easier. I'll make sure to check the hints and tips provided by others, as well.

Welcome.
As soon as you master the 'not so standard' turn system I hope you will enjoy the game. Feel free to ask questions. We, the coders or other TOS adicts will answer them soon. Have fun !

Welcome to the addiction![:)]
Let us know how the learning curve goes, there's plenty of people here just itching to help new people.

So, 3 scenarios down, 2 victories, one utter annihilation. I got stuck in the tutorial, at the same spot as the person in the Support forum, until I figured out how to use the wait commands. I dont know if I missed that section in the tutorial, but it really needs to be expanded on. It's such an intregal part of the turn system. Now that I've got that part, the rest is pretty straight forward.
The first two scenarios were random missions, where I put a 100% bonus to my team, and both ended up with 3 40t recon mechs against a 70t (that would be a heavy in BT, but maybe a medium in ToS?). In the first one, I got in some good shots early on, and he wasn't returning fire at all. It wasn't until later that I discoverd why: 4 machine guns, and a pair of chainsaws. Ultimate close combat fighting machine. He deftly chopped up 2 of my mechs, and went one on one against the last, who's Gauss gun eventually took him out with a lucky headshot. The 2nd was quite similar.
The 3rd scenario, though, was a bit different. I finally figured out how to start a campaign, and did the first mission of the Savannah(sp?) campaign. 3 on 3, with 2 of my mechs ending in failed ejections, and the first one going supernova, taking out my 3rd mech, and the enemy mech that was standing in the same hex. 3 dead pilots. Luckily it was a simulation, and my pilots lived, but it's a match they will not soon forget. Now I have to wait until I get home from work for a rematch.

Will take a look at the tutorial.
A 70 tonner in ToS is a light. For reference, Titan tonnages are double those of 'Mechs.
You'll have to be careful with blowing up engines [:)] Especially with low level jocks, they usually suck at damage control. An engine explosion will affect everything in a 2 hex radius, with varying degrees of damage depending on distance.
Most (but not all) campaign maps only save the squad file if the player is successfull, that's a map designer's choice. It allows you to try it over and over again until you manage to beat it.

Just wondering what titans you are using for the Savannah campaign, did you make your own squad or do you use the one that come witht he game.

I made my own squad, Human Male, Human Female, and Rep I Female (in that order, for leader, business and mechanic). I probably could have min/maxed their stats/skills better, as there's no listing in the manual as to what bonuses each race gets.
I cant recall off hand what the mechs were, but I do remember their general weapon load:
Leader - Gauss Cannon, Machine Gun
Business - Plasma Cannon, SL
Tech - AC4, AC4, HMG

Cool, you jumped in with both feet. Looks like pretty good choices for race to me. Page 8 in the manual has the info your looking for.

Outstanding long range firepower, just be careful and try to keep a good distance from the enemy if you can, both the GC and PC both have bad modifiers once the enemy gets within their minimum range. Rookie jocks and recons in TOS tend to end up at close range quite a bit.
Have a blast

RE: Cant wait to play
Those are
Gauss Cannon + MG = Unicorn
Plasma Gun + SL = Stingray
2 AC 4 + HMG = Zealot
If you have enough money to buy a second set of Titans, try getting some short range titans. I would recommend either Swift Death or Fang for the Cannon Weapon type jocks, and Prowler or Pest for the Energy Weapon type jocks. If you have a jock that's good at both Cannons and Energy Weapons... I like using the Guru. Tesla bolt for gratification or frustration.
If you haven't gotten hold of the unofficial titan database update, I would recommend doing so. I think Thorgrim has it. There's a few titans that need a few tweaks due to balancing changes made from ToSv 1.4 and ToS:WS

He already had asked me for it, and should have it in his PM folder [:)]

I just recently started as well. Like Kabal, I have a lengthy background in Mech games. I picked up the turn system by the end of the 1st battle [:D] I was wondering if I could get the updated titans as well? Also, if I use those files will, they overwrite my custom titans?
One more question, If I'm playing the retail version can I still do net games with my friend who just has the freeware version?
Thanks in advance [&o]

Ok, you run across that open field to draw their fire, then I'll snipe them when they show themselves...

If you just copy the new titan database you will overwrite your custom designs. This is what you can do :
1. Export your custom designs with the factory
2. Copy the new database
3. Import your custom designs.
Netgames are only possible between same versions of the game. Both have to play the commercial version AND the same patch level.
RE: Cant wait to play
Flux, and Iskandar, it seems there's some problems with attachments, including in PMs. Email me and I'll send it ASAP.

You are quite correct, those were indeed the titans I was using. And thanks for the suggestion of the Swift Death. That has become my favorite recon titan. Useless at range, but absolutely devastating when in close combat. It was a great mech to use in the 2nd of the Savannah scenarios, as it would engage the incoming titans at short range, allowing the long range firepower of the Unicorn and Stingray to remain in optimum range. The 2nd and 3rd scenarios are now behind me, in total victories, as is the first of the Deep Core missions. I'm really starting to get a kick out of this game.

That particular message says the following:
"
Incoming transmission on mission frequency:
Congratulations, Jock ... on Titan ... has destroyed the building!
Proceed now to the wood in the east by clicking on 'call move'.
Reach hex '11/11' by using 'run' or try to practise 'automove'.
Set the attack to 'wait' and then 'on units' and finally 'new foe' (you'll be
prompted with the 'attack menu' again as soon as you encounter an enemy titan).
"
Notice the 2nd paragraph should take care of the attack menu. But it is not too clear, it might give the impression that it should be done only after reaching hex 11/11. So it'll get cleaned up.
Any other details that need clarification with the tutorial, please post them.
