Issue with Operation Hickory

Post by Feltan »

I'll begin this post by stating that I may be totally wrong. I am not very experienced with the game, so I could be missing something.

The issue has to do with the missionin Operation Hickory to airlift 3/4 Marines to an "LZ along 606." I found three likely LZ's:

LZ Crow
Helicopter Valley
Nam Dang A/F Abandoned

However, the helicopters can't get to ground level at any of these prosepective LZ's, and air insertion is not possible.

So, am I missing a prospective LZ? Are the LZ's non-operative? And on a larger note why can't helicopters land in a meadow hex or a clear hex? Is there some game mechanic that dictates only designated LZ's are the only place to unload units?

Or am I doing something wrong?

Regards,
Feltan

I'm taking a look at Into the DMZ - Operation Hickory (May 18, 1967)

There are a couple landing zones along Route 606: the first at 26,22 and 27,22 and the second at 38,19 and 39,19

If you are playing with the Historical Landing Zones option ON, you will be forced to use the Historical Landing Zones.

You can quickly see the landing zones by selecting the Highlight tab and then the Highlight Landing Zones button. It will darken all the hexes except for landing zones.

Jason,

Thank you for responding so quickly and clearly.

The hex locations for LZ's cleared everything up in a heartbeat.

In the military, you are never lost; you are just temporarily misdirected. And I was misdirected on this map.

The operations order calls out Rt. 606 and 561. I found them, but found them at 31,51 and 43, 51 (for 606) and 28,71 (561). With your response I see that there is "anther" Rt. 606 far to the north .... the road is labeled in two different locations. It just might be a windy road that snakes around; it might be mislabeled on the map, but it was enough to royally confuse me.

A humble suggestion, add some of the key hex locations to the operations orders. Might take a few mintes, but in real-life operations orders the grid squares have to be included in the order.

Thanks again.

Regards,
Feltan
