What do the map routes mean?

What do the map routes mean?

Anyone know what the map routes mean? They don't seem to correlate with the warp routes that the civillian or military ships take. And the old ones change with new colonies. I'm not sure how the game draws these lines and what they represent.

Anyone know?

i think its just a visual, so you have more an idea what planet belongs to what empire

They represent major lines of traffic, this is also why they may change over time.

They are a good way to get a general overview of your civilian traffic and how they interact with your logistical infrastructure.
