[WAD] gps weapons destroy moving targets like they're not moving

Post by 50caliberGhost »

It seems like cmo doesnt exactly model gps weapons hitting a moving target as in real life they would have trouble hitting the last position of a moving vehicle, i.e truck, tank, etc. Laser guided or imaging infrared weapons work well for moving targets but I noticed that a gps jdam was still able to destroy a truck that had moved a kilometer away from its launch position. The jdam impacted a kilometer away from the truck. maybe the aircraft launching the jdam had a laser targeting pod but artillery gps shells hit moving targets with no laser guidance as well. I dont think they get gps updates midflight.

Even today's advanced excalibur artillery shells are just now getting laser guidance to hit moving targets like excalibur-s.

If this is a glitch will it eventually be modelled differently?

I'm pretty sure recent versions of the JDAMs for the Navy have a continuously updated GPS capability. The firing aircraft can update the GPS coordinates to hit moving targets. There is also the L/JDAM. I took a quick look at the db and it appears most JDAMs can't target moving units. But the most recent ones and the "L" version have moving targets listed.

It would be useful to list the actual version you are concerned about.

The 'L' in L-JDAM refers to a laser tracker head and the bomb unit has dual guidance. https://www.dote.osd.mil/Portals/97/pub ... 111609-863

Pretty sure that there are no pure JDAMs that can hit a moving target, I could be wrong there. LJDAMs are becoming more common however.

There is a version that has entered production recently that uses continuously updating GNSS coordinates fed from a litening pod of some aircraft-based targeting system with a datalink.

I can see 'continuously updating GNSS coordinates' or laser pods assisting to hit a moving target - Its not too hard for a modern aircraft then. I fired an excalibur gps artillery shell at a moving target and it misses - it only hits a non-moving object. Looks like cmo models gps correctly after all. It must be hard to destroy a tank like i see in the news these days most shells arent gps let alone laser guided.

I was using a gbu-38 blu-126/b non-laser guided jdam.

The 126 specifically lists "moving targets" as a target type. If you think that is in error, use the db change form to get a change.

After much research and simulating in cmo the db has no errors i can find i must have simulated something wrong. Any laser guided weapons like gbu-54 ljdam or paveway lgb will hit moving but a non-laser guided weapon like 2022 f35 with gbu-38(v)4/b jdam blu-126 will only hit a stationary vehicle even with gps. I must have been using an ljdam originally sorry. Im glad i understand this now though.
