Logistics Freight...

Post by DarkHorse2 »

This is something I wish I understood better.

Following is a map-snippet of Vienna, an Axis NSS.

Tooltip says that 45k freight was sent out. But when you mouse over the adjacent rail lines, you can only see that rail usage combined for all tracks exiting Vienna was only 23k.

Where did that other 22k of freight go? How did it get out?

Also, when you mouse-over hexes to view rail usage, why is it overwhelming displaying values of:

* 5,416?
* 10,833?

What is special about these values? Why do double-tracked rail lines seem to only want to allow 10,833 tons of freight delivered?

Why do my rail lines appear to have capacity that is rarely fully used?

Given I have 2.5 million tons of freight stockpiled at each of my NSS, why aren't the rail lines exiting these NSS locations burning bright RED from all of the freight trains leaving?

In the following map-snippet, why is all of this transport capacity not being utilized? The RED circles denotes where transport capacity was being used, but that is hardly anything.

Hanny

the manual is your friend here. So suggest a wander that way.

what you see is last turns usage/6 (if that was below 30k for a dual track line), if there was any usage > 30k then the divisor is set at /4 (as severe congestion means even more trains out of place etc).

its really that simple an explanation

this is what i was also asking some time ago

and it was explained to me, as loki writes, that you see result of after logistics phase, and in logistics phase double rail line is used up to a maximum which is 30k without penalties and then that usage is cleared
so ~30k/6 = ~5k

and this is that magic number 5416 that you see on a double rail lines

so if most of your double rail lines have 5416 usage - good!

Lovely....

So all the meaningful rail-usage information has already been cleared from the map.

And they thought this would be useful to the players..... how exactly?

Hanny, I'd guess because the number shown is critical.

this turn's usage is going to be the residual from earlier turns (ie what is shown at the start), plus the cost of units plus what will be left for freight moves.

or in other words since the one bit you have complete agency over is unit moves, you have information as to whether that is a good idea or not. If you had say 36k showing in the hex you'd need to divide the 30k/6 and the 6k/4 to get that number. Or ... you can reverse that bit of maths and get back to the number you believe to be critical ...

I am with you here that there is a simple math operation ...
Just my math is not returning.

30.000 / 6 = 5.000
So I am meant to have a value between 1 to 5000 - and I know it's /6.

If I get to 30.001 it is /4 you said.
I'll even get some rubber band. Say, it's 32.000.

32.000 / 4 = 8.000

So there must be something amiss.

Because 5400 * 6 = 32400; but that cannot be as it should be /4.
But if I multiply 5400 * 4 = 21600 ... which cannot be either as it would be /6.

I am not contesting how it works here - I am just saying there ought to be something amiss in the explaination.

its a wee bit more subtle, lets say we have 34k of usage last turn, the residual is:

30k/6 = 5k

plus 4k/4 = 1k

so a net 6k

the key bit is the calculation for breaching the notional capacity is only applied to the excess.

There is another small bit which is relevant in the USSR mostly. 'Usage' that follows air or partisan action is also /4 regardless of the total. I think this reflects that in this case its not just trains out of place etc its a degree of physical damage

If I recall, some of this was missed from the release manual but its in the Living Manual

Smooth then.

It is also more clear with the example that it's what is above 30.000 that is divided by 4, and not the whole lot! (Akin to tax brackets!)
