How to use auxiliary and support units?

Post by gremlok »

As a novice axis player I usually only invest in tech and upgrades for panzers and beef up armies, FJ, SF and Inf corps. I rarely build use any kind of artillery, trains, rockets, AT or aa units nor do I upgrade AA capabilities.

How does experienced players use these units, I am sure I’m missing out here, can somebody provide ways and examples on how to best employ these?

Artillery - Yes, need for siege of major city or entrenched area
Armored Train - Yes, respectable piece to finish off units. Don't need tech.
Rockets - I've played them for fun, but always a losing prop. Thus, No if you serious.
Anti-Tanks - If you're gonna accept the 3 units from script, would hurt to have +1, +2 tech.
AA - Yes, for sure.

Speaking as German player. Only so much cash to spend.
Italy. Depends, they broke.

I concur on artillery. It’s a more reliable form of a medium bomber because it works rain or shine. Best to “operate” to the intended trouble spots. It has a deterring effect too if you’re on the defensive.

The train seems to always come in handy. It pops off that one extra shot that does the trick. You’ll rarely lose that unit and there’s no losses in using it. It’s like having a free shot at whatever.

Assuming rocket artillery and not the missiles. I believe that one has an added shock effect. My opinion on this is, more the merrier. You’ll eventually reach a point where the lines are clearly stagnant with level 2 HQs all over the place and a grind. Breaking that up can take a lot of bashing before a unit pops. And then, another one just takes its place. Best to hit it with all the entrenchment/morale reducing stuff and then come with the troops and finally tanks and tactical.

Level 3 AA is one of the Axis's best friends...especially Germany. Protects all adjacent units from Allied air.
Keep HQs and fighters around them.
Also the tech will protect your land units up to 2 lvls, and HQ's and the AA units can go up to lvl 3.
You don't have that...you will get massacred by Allied air, especially in Western Europe...in MP matches anyways.
