Public resources of Japan's "War History Series" in English for download

Post by jiajia1 »

For those who has great interest with war in the pacific history on Japan side, "War History Series" is a must reading (total 102 volumes). But the English version is hard to get from what I know.

The Corts Foundation opened their 3 volumes of English translation for public download:
The Invasion of the Dutch East Indies (volume 3)
The operations of the Navy in the Dutch East Indies and the Bay of Bengal (volume 26)
The Invasion of the South Army Air Force Operations, and the Invasion of Northern and Central Sumatra (extracted from volume 5 and 34)

Volume 54 and 92 also focus on Southern-Western but opponents were US and UK not Dutch.
I will continue to try find more. You may put here what you have got.

Give up.
Apart from 3 columes by Dutch and 1 by Australian. The only possible place I found is Naval Historical Collection Archives and it is not for public. People were talking about Google translation with scanned original files but it has too many Chinese characters and were written from right to left and top to bottom like ancient Chinese books

Unfortunately only those were ever translated to English. It is pity, since they'd be invaluable resource.

I wonder if there'd be way to petition JSDF to undertake the project.

Have to ask if that'd be possible.

"War History Series" is the first choice for normal JFBs because it is very friendly to read. For hardcore JFBs they have better choices -- first hand original raw materials.

I bought one book last year when I was in China with English name could be translated into "Japanese war history of WW2 compilation". The table of contents and catalogs are Chinese but content is totally in English about battle records of Philippine from Nov 1941 to Dec 1944. It is hard to read for me so I only spent 5 minutes on it and put it into bookshelf. It is one of total 30 volumes 18,000 pages. Many "War History Series" contents were from these docs.

I believe The National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS) do have plan translate raw files into English. Many of them show "Data in English is under preparation" when browsing JACAR.
