[FIXED][1258.2] Very slow AGM-65s

Post by fvector »

Ever since the energy-based missile performance envelope has been added to the model in 1243, I notice that the AGM-65 launches with a well below nominal speed (maxes out around 560 knots) and happily glides down at below 200 knots. I don't think this is a database issue because I've seen it with some other air to ground missiles.

I launched one at a target from 3600 ft AGL and observed a glide ratio of 8:1 at 175 knots! An RQ-7A Shadow probably couldn't do much better than that!

I also tested against a Mk.84 Paveway III, both launched at 23600 ft AGL at around 6 nm, and the bomb got there much faster. The AGM-65 should drop like a rock below 200 knots.

Thanks. Tweaked the "minimum average speed" setting as well as the stall-speed calculation so that now it should impact at around 300 knots at max range (depending on glide angle).

There is a further correction that needs to be made specifically for this weapon, on the DB side (max speed should be supersonic). Alerted the DB authors and hopefully this will be included on the next DB release.

There is also a bigger-picture issue here, as pure-coast weapons (LGBs, JSOWs etc.) are outrunning Mavericks on time-to-target, which is a realism flaw. Discussing this internally.

We decided to temporarily disable the boost-coast mechanics for non-AAW weapons, until we can develop a more refined version of the model for ASuW weapons and especially unpowered ones.

I think that's very reasonable considering that ground targets and ships can't evade missiles anyway.
The boogabooga doctrine for CMO: Any intentional human intervention needs to be able to completely and reliably over-ride anything that the AI is doing at any time.
